The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has again disclosed that it has so far registered 1,205,187 candidates for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME, which will commence Saturday, March 16 and end Saturday, March 23.
It was gathered that Lagos and Kaduna states recorded the highest registrations with 161,654 and 76,049 candidates, respectively.
The board also reiterated that the phone numbers candidates used for their profile code registration, electronic pin vending and registration for the previous UTME, can only be used for the 2019 UTME by the same candidates only and no other person.
JAMB equally added that candidates using their previous phone numbers for the second or third time will use the same profile code to purchase the electronic pin. If the profile code has been forgotten, the candidate can retrieve it through a text message. In other words, the old profile code can be used by the same candidate to procure the new electronic pin.

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has said that the 2019 general elections would not affect the board’s 2019/2020 examination.
He made this remark while fielding questions from journalists shortly after delivering the 2018 Annual Sobo Sowemimo Lecture of the Abeokuta Club in Abeokuta.
Oloyede said that since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had given the dates of the elections, then the board would only need to adjust accordingly.
“I don’t think there will be any need for a shift in the examination date because of the 2019 general elections. I believe INEC has done well by giving us a prior notice six months ago.
“They have given us the date of the elections. So we have no excuse not to have adjusted. We have adjusted appropriately,” he said.
Oloyede decried the rate at which candidates, who were not qualified to write the examination applied for it, thereby, causing what he described as “unnecessary luggage” on the board.
He said that the examination body would adopt stiffer measures to check incidences of unqualified candidates from applying and writing the examination for the 2019/2020 admission exercise.
Oloyede noted that JAMB would not allow anyone to take undue advantage over others, saying the board would not repeat the mistake it recorded in the last examination as regards this development.
The JAMB registrar said the body would begin the 2019/2020 examination process by October, promising that the procedure for the next examination would be better than the last one.
“We are on with the 2018/2019 admission exercise. This, we started just about a month ago. We believe that by the end of October, we would then begin the 2019/2020 admission.
“I can assure you that we are fine-tuning and learning from our mistakes last year. We are perfecting the processes and procedures, ensuring that no one is allowed to have undue advantage over the others.
Oloyede, who did not disclose the exact number of the applicants expected for the 2019 exercise, said measures had been put in place to ensure that all applicants are minimally qualified.
“It is difficult to say the exact number of applicants we are expecting this time. We expect to crash the number because many of those who are taking the forms are not even prepared or qualified for the exam.
“Some are SS1 students, who are just trying; contributing N5, 000 unduly to our purse. We are putting in place some checks to make people who want to apply to be minimally qualified.
“That’s where we are moving to, rather than creating unrealistic figures. We cannot say actually this is the figure but we are trying to ensure that we don’t have unnecessary luggage.
“We are not interested in the money. We are interested in having adequate preparation for those who are genuine students,” he added.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), on Wednesday, cautioned private cyber cafe operators against extortion of prospective candidates who want to upload their results on the board’s website.
The Head of Media of the board, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, gave the caution in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Benjamin said that the caution became necessary following several complaints made to the board by the victims, on fraudulent activities by some private café operators.
He said the candidates complained of a high amount of money they were being charged by such operators to upload their WAEC results on JAMB website.
“Not only do they charge them high, they also convince candidates who had already uploaded their results on the site to do same again.
“Candidates who have had their results uploaded at the point of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration need not do that again, except for those who registered with awaiting results.
“Those are the ones allowed to upload now on our website.
“This upload should not cost more than N100.
“No cyber café should charge more than this amount, however, if candidates can locate any of our Computer Based Test (CBT) Centres, it is free to make the upload there,” Benjamin said.
NAN correspondent who visited some of the cyber cafés in Bwari reports that while some charge a negotiable N500, few charge up to N1, 000 for the result upload.
The exercise follows the recent release of 2018 WAEC results and the announcement by JAMB that“leaders of institutions agreed that the First Choice Admission would be conducted from July 2 to Oct. 16’’.
According to the board, the Second Choice Admission is to commence from Oct.17 to Dec.17.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed June 26 for the 2018 admission policy meeting to kick-start the admission process into the nation’s tertiary institutions.
Benjamin said;
“The main reason for the meeting is to define all modalities for admission of qualified candidates into the nation’s tertiary institutions for the 2018/2019 academic session.
“The board has concluded arrangements for this year’s admission policy meeting with all stakeholders in the education sector.
“This kind of meeting is to give room for contributions as well as ensure fairness and equity in the conduct of the 2018/2019 admission process.
“We are expecting in attendance all heads of tertiary institutions across the country.
“We shall be convening this meeting, for the first time, in the South-West, Osun precisely.
“All the South-West governors have been invited coupled with other critical stakeholders.
“To ensure that there is no misrepresentation of facts or information, there will be a live coverage of the meeting on NTA from 11:30a.m. to 1:30p.m, so that Nigerians can follow the proceedings,” he said.
Benjamin said that in addition, Nigerians would also be able to get first-hand information on how the admission would be conducted, especially the requirements needed.
He assured Nigerians that the board would continue to ensure it brought on board innovations and reforms that would give the candidates an edge over admission process challenges.
“Our determined objective is to ensure that every prospective candidate is treated fairly and equally under a transparent platform.
“We will also continue to strive to open up space for healthy competition.
“As it was done in 2017, this year’s admission process will also be conducted through the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).
“This system eliminates all human interference in the admission exercise, where candidates are selected purely on the basis of defined criteria,” Benjamin said.

About 330 visually-impaired candidates, yesterday, sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Enugu and Benin centres.
The National Coordinator, JAMB Equal Opportunity Group, Prof. Peter Okebukola, who disclosed this at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, on Monday, said the group was responsible for administering the 2018 UTME to prisoners and the blind candidates nationwide.
According to him, the purpose was to allow people, regardless of their ethnicity, creed and other dis-aggregating attributes, have access to tertiary education, adding “this is deriving from the National Policy on Education.”
He also disclosed that the group had, on Saturday, conducted the examination for those in the prisons.
Also speaking, the Director, Anglo Welfare Association for the Blind, as well as United Nations Committee Member on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Danlami Basharu, said, “We ensured they turned up promptly and that everyone has the right writing equipment.
“I am helping to see that their accommodation, papers and all the equipment for writing are well secured.”
Speaking further, Okebukola, one-time Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, NUC, added that “for now, they will have to make do with the dictation mode as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, organisers of the examination, is working towards a suitable Computer-Based Test, CBT mode soon.
“The software we have now that comes with the Braille Note Apex machine is not Nigerian enough for their comprehension.
“So, we are developing a software that will have a Nigerian in-built intonation. We are hopeful that before the commencement of 2019 UTME, we would have moved quite far in the development of the software.”
When asked if the special candidates get special consideration in terms cut-off marks and admission into universities, Okebukola said, “What qualifies them is their performances; what qualifies candidates into the university are their scores in the UTME, and their scores in the post-UTME.”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is expected to release the second batch of the results for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) today, Tuesday, March 20.
The board’s Head of Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, confirmed to Nigerian Tribune that the Board held a crucial meeting on Monday over the results and that some results were to be released after the meeting or today.
Benjamin also disclosed that no other result had been released after the first batch of over 300,000 results.
“The Board is working diligently to ensure that the results are processed and posted on the board’s website soonest.
“The board was delaying some of the results because each has to undergo total scrutiny before being posted on its website to avoid cancellations later.
“Modalities were being put in place to ensure all the results are transparent and accurate.
“Tuesday’s result will be the second batch of the recently concluded UTME, which a total of 1,662,762 candidates registered for,” Benjamin said.
He added that it had cancelled UTME results of Computer-based test centres where CCTV cameras showed malpractices.
There has been tension and panic among candidates, as they have not been able to access their results over one week since they wrote the exams.
The 2018 UTME, which started on Friday, March 9, 2018, was written by over 1.6 million candidates.
The exam ended on Saturday, March 17, 2018.

A school teacher, Timothy Samuel, has been arrested by officers of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja for impersonating his sibling, Samson Samuel, in the ongoing 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
The school teacher was reportedly caught at the Air Mass Computer Institute in the Madalla area of Niger State by a team comprising operatives of the NSCDC and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
It was gathered that Timothy’s mother had persuaded him to sit the examination on behalf of his brother, who had taken ill.
The JAMB Supervisor at the Madalla Computer-Based Test Centre, Sakina Tafida, said the suspect evaded screening and sneaked into the examination hall.
“We, however, found that the number of exam slips that we collected after the fingerprint screening was less than the number of candidates in the hall. He actually skipped the fingerprint device and the photograph on the slip he gave us later was that of his brother, Samson,” Tafida said.
The JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, who confirmed the arrest, said the mother of the two children was to blame.
He said, “Parents need to disassociate themselves from this shameful attitude. It is against any type of parenting that you want to inculcate the spirit of deceit into your children.”

The controversy surrounding the mystery snake that sneaked into the account office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, in Makurdi, Benue State and swallowed N36 million cash seems to be far from over.
Our source had reported that an account staff, Joan Asen and a lady outside JAMB allegedly connived to steal the money “spiritually” through a mysterious snake that always crawled into the office to swallow the money from the vault.
This development has raised eyebrows and stirred controversies online as Nigerians have been voicing out their views.
However, this time around few Nigerian celebrities have described the report as a mockery of Nigeria as a whole.
Here are some comments:

The JAMB staff narrated how the incident happened
A staff of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has narrated to the stunned management how a mystery snake swallowed a whopping N36 million proceeds from the sale of admission scratch cards in Makurdi, Benue state.
According to a report by Saturday Sun, the mystery snake was said to have sneaked into the account office of the Board in Makurdi, a number of time, and made away with the N36m. .
A sales clerk, Philomina Chieshe, told JAMB registrar and his team that she could not account for the N36m she made in previous years before the abolition of scratch cards. In the course of interrogation, Philomena denied the allegations that she stole the money.
She however confessed that it was her housemaid that connived with another JAMB staff, Joan Asen, to “spiritually” steal the money from the vault in the account office.
Philomina, in her confessional statement, said that Joan Asen and her accomplices confessed that they have been stealing the money “spiritually” through a mysterious snake that always sneak into the office to swallow the money from the vault.
According to her “It was a mystery to me too. I have been saving the money in the bank, but I found it difficult to account for it. So I started saving it in a vault in the office. But each time I open the vault, I will find nothing.”
