Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has filed papers in court challenging the ban placed by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on his song, “This is Nigeria”.
The court documents were filed through Falz’s lawyers, Adepetun Caxton-Martins Agbor & Segun (ACAS-Law), on November 6, 2018, three months after the NBC sent a letter to JODAJ Global Communications Limited in Jos sanctioning them for playing Falz’s song, “This Is Nigeria” and banning the song from being played on radio, along with other songs.
In the letter sent to JODAJ Global Communications Limited, NBC stated that the reason for banning This Is Nigeria is that the lyrics are vulgar and in contravention of the NBC Code.
A lot of Nigerians, including celebrities, criticized NBC for the ban, stating it was ridiculous, but the ban was upheld.
Falz had hinted in an interview granted in August that he would write to the NBC to seek a justification for the ban and if necessary, seek legal redress in the courts. He has now followed through on his words by taking legal action against the regulatory body.
The singer, who is also a lawyer, has taken steps in engaging his lawyers, ACAS-Law, to institute an action against the NBC challenging the ban. The Originating Summons reveals that Falz is seeking, among other things, for:
A declaration that the Defendant’s prohibition of the Plaintiff’s song titled “This Is Nigeria” from being aired by the Nigerian media outfits on the pretext that same is laced with vulgar lyrics is in flagrant breach of the Plaintiff’s right to the freedom of thought, conscience and expression as guaranteed under Sections 38 and 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and to that extent, such prohibition is unconstitutional, null and void.
An Order of this Honourable Court setting aside and/or vacating the decision of the Defendant as contained in the letter dated 6th August 2018 and lifting the ban or proscription of the use of the Plaintiff’s song titled, “This Is Nigeria” by any and all Nigerian media outfit/organizations.
The sum of N100,000,000 (One Hundred Million Naira to the Plaintiff on the footing of aggravated and exemplary damages for the wrongful and unconstitutional acts of the Defendant.
At a time when the social conscience of the average Nigerian is awakening or better described as being “woke”, not a few Nigerians are using their talents to draw attention to the ills of the society.

Reports has it that the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has asked Nigerian rapper Falz The Bahd Guy to withdraw his much-talked-about ‘This is Nigeria’ video and apologize to Nigerians, or face legal action.
The Muslim group bothers their sentiments around the hijab-wearing dancers that were put on display in the video. Even though Prodigeezy (the video director) had explained to NET that the dancers were a depiction of the abducted Chibok girls, Ishaq Akintola (director of MURIC) insists that it was a spiteful action intended to denigrate Islam and Muslims.
MURIC also asked that Falz make a public apology.
The statement read:
MURIC rejects Falz’ explanation that the girls in hijab in his ‘Shaku Shaku’ dance symbolize the Chibok girls because nothing in the video indicates that the girls represent the Chibok girls.
At least none of the Chibok girls have been seen dancing like a drunkard. They are always in pensive mood. Do they have any cause to be dancing? Are they happy?
The video manifests ethnic bias against Fulanis while it ignored the criminal activities of ethnic militia of the Middle Belt who have also massacred Fulanis and rustled their cattle in their thousands.
It is a hate video. This video has the potential of causing religious crisis of unprecedented dimension.
It is an assault on the self-dignity of every Muslim. It is freedom of expression gone haywire.
We therefore demand its withdrawal and an apology to Nigerian Muslims within seven days or the authors and their agents will face legal action if they fail to comply.
Only the scenes portraying police brutality and the money-swallowing snake in the video are near the truth.
We call the attention of security agencies to this hate action.
We remind Nigerians of the outcome of similar provocative actions in the past and their unpalatable outcomes.
The National Film And Video Censors Board (NFVCB), a regulatory agency set up by Act No. 85 of 1993 to regulate films and the video industry has a case to answer. ‘Shaku Shaku’ video was shot and released under its watch.
Instead of going violent, Nigerian Muslims should take those behind the ‘Shaku Shaku’ video to court in order to serve as a deterrent to others.
We, therefore, give notice of impending legal action against the artist behind the ‘Shaku Shaku’ video unless the latter is withdrawn and an apology is widely published within seven days.

Inkblot Productions and Filmone Distribution have gathered the industry’s biggest and fastest rising actors in their new film.
Titled New Money, the star-studded movie was directed by one of Nigeria’s celebrated female director Tope Oshin and boasts of a stellar cast ranging from Veterans Kate Henshaw, Femi Branch, Kalu Ikeagwu and Dakore Akande to Nollywood newbies Jemima Osunde and Adeolu Adefarasin.
Set in Lagos, Nigeria, New Money was written by Chinaza Onuzo and follows the life of Toun Odumosu (played by Jemima Osunde), a young aspiring designer whose life changes following the death of an absentee tycoon father (Kalu Ikeagwu) who left her to fill his shoes. The comedy drama follows her coming to terms with her newfound riches and takes the audience through her journey as she tries to successfully merge her newfound wealth with her old life.
Aside newbie Jemima Osunde, the film also features musician Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana and break out Instagram Comedian Wofai Fada who play major roles as Quam (Toun’s Boyfriend) and Binta (Toun’s best friend) respectively. Wale Ojo, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Osas Ajibade, Daniel Etim Effiong and Bikiya Graham-Douglas also bring their A- game.

Nigerian Singer and actor, Folarin Falana, aka Falz, has disclosed how he almost died from a robbery incident.
Falz speaking in an interview with Punch, said he almost died with his management team sometime ago after his driver was shot during a robbery incident on the high way.
According to him, looking at his life at the moment, God saved him for a reason, adding that that was one of his toughest experiences in his life.
He said;
“In November 2013, I had a terrible accident. It was a near-death experience and I was in the vehicle with my management team.
“The accident was caused by armed robbery. We were on the highway when suddenly the car was shot at. The driver was killed and we ended up in a ditch.
“I sustained injuries and the visible scars on my body are from that day.
“I really thought it was the end, especially when the driver died and his foot was still on the throttle, making the car to continue moving. As the car was about to crash, I just covered my face and brace for impact. I thought that at least, one should die as a fine boy.
“After the crash, the armed robbers came and ransacked all the bags in the car, looking for money. Today, I continue to remember that incident and I know that God kept me alive for a reason.”
Speaking about his plans for marriage, Falz said he had been under pressure to get married since BankyW got married.
“In recent past, people have been putting me under a lot of pressure to get ready. When Banky W and Adesua got married last year and it almost broke the Internet, it put a lot of pressure on bachelors like me. Everybody is getting married; so, I think it’s high time for me.”
He added

Wizkid

Without an iota of sentiment, her singles and their videos were a back to back hit which is why Showtime believes 2018 will not be an exception.
Toby Grey
Grey Nation lead act, Toby Grey, has been all about setting a standard never seen in the history of Nigerian music. With a few singles and videos to her credit, she is set to stamp her feet on the music space and put some female colleagues of hers on their toes. In a chat with Showtime, she gave a hint on why she should be watched in 2018. “2018 has already started on a positive note and a positive vibe so I’d just say to my fans that I plan on pushing boundaries this year. I’m not going to be predictable, as I’ve never been; I’m going to be working with local and international artistes and so would be releasing a body of work before the end of the year, so Grey Soldiers, expect greatness”, she said.
Reekado Banks
Going by word on the streets and Showtime’s meticulous observation and investigation all through 2017, Mavin Records music act, Ayoleyi Hanniel, better known as Reekado Banks is definitely one Nigerian artiste to be on the lookout for in 2018. It has been said that the youngster is rather too talented to be limited at Mavin Records. Over time, music pundits opined that with the way he dazzled with entertainment panache in 2017, if only he can part ways with Mavin Records, then he would be free to soar musically as expected of him.
Kiss Daniel
Some might be tempted to argue that because he is currently neck deep in a contract breach saga with his former label, ‘G-Worldwide, which he recently dumped to float his own, FLYBOI INC, 2017 was a bad one for Kiss Daniel; but such is not the case for the ‘Yeba’ crooner. Though he is yet to debut with his own concert like Mayorkun, Adekunle Gold, Falz, Simi, among others, he is currently rated among top ten artistes who will give fans reasons to ask for more musically in 2018. The music space is yet to savour enough of his songs, ‘Yeba’, ‘Mama’, ‘Sofa’, ‘Kilamiti’, so why won’t he be on the list of artistes to watch out for in 2018? Trust me; the talented singer may be locking horns with Tekno, Runtown, and others for supremacy in 2018.
Falz
This chart would be incomplete without mentioning the ‘Bahd’ guy himself, Falz, who bristled with power and purpose in 2017, ending it with his debut concert ‘The Falz Experience’. Since he broke into limelight with his unique kind of rap music, he hasn’t failed to continue living up to expectation with good music which is one out of many reasons Showtime believes he should be one of the artistes to watch in 2018.
Niniola
If there are five top Nigerian female music acts to be on the keen look out for in 2018, energetic singer, Niniola will most definitely make that list because she gave the entertainment space a run for its money in 2017. With her debut album, ‘This Is Me’, Niniola stamped her arrival on the Nigerian music scene. No doubt she had a bumper 2017 with club bangers including ‘Sicker’ and ‘Maradona’, both off her first studio album. Who knows, 2018 may be the turning point in her career as she may go international like Wizkid, Davido and others who have since launched their international music careers and are breaking boundaries already.
Soti
