Jumia, Africa’s leading e-commerce platform, has signed an important partnership with technology leader Xiaomi at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, giving millions of users in Africa easy access to Xiaomi products.
Through the partnership, Jumia will open the Mi official store on its platform and give Xiaomi access to millions of online customers across 14 countries in the continent, while Jumia will be able to offer Redmi Go (1GB+8GB) exclusively in Africa as well as other devices later in the year. The partnership will be supported by an ambitious joint-marketing plan over the full year 2019, leveraging Jumia’s digital assets and Xiaomi marketing capabilities, including the Mi fan community. This is the promising first step to a close partnership between both companies over the years to come.
“This partnership is very important for us, as it will definitely foster the smartphone adoption in Africa as well as support e-commerce penetration. Xiaomi and Jumia have very similar internet DNA and will serve a common purpose: delivering the best in class affordable smartphones along with the best shopping experience. This will be very beneficial for both companies and above all for the consumers in Africa”, said Jumia Group’s Senior Vice President Mr Romain Christodoulou, during the signing ceremony.
“We believe in working with companies that share our values and delighted to partner with Jumia to reach more Mi fans across Africa,” said Wang Xiang, Senior Vice President of Xiaomi.
“The e-commerce model is part of Xiaomi’s DNA and we believe that working with Jumia will help us bring innovation for everyone across the continent.”
Reacting to the news, the chief executive officer of Jumia Nigeria, Mrs Juliet Anammah described the partnership as coming in the nick of time, when Nigeria was listed among 7 countries that would contribute 700 million new mobile subscribers to hit the 6 billion mobile subscribers mark in the world by 2025.
“Availability of lower price point smartphones such as Xiaomi will deepen smartphone penetration in the country and help the country in meeting its 4% quota of the 700 million new global mobile subscribers, as predicted by GSMA Intelligence,” she added.
The partnership will initially cover Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Morocco, and Ghana, and aim to cover all other countries where Jumia operates. Most markets will be directly supplied from China, confirming the fast expansion of intercontinental trade in Africa.
Africa has seen the rise of affordable entry-level devices from price-focused brands especially from China, which remains a key driver of smartphone adoption in the continent. Smartphone penetration in Africa stood at approximately 36% in 2018, with the number expected to reach about 66% by 2025.

A 74-year-old man ranting about a broken phone drove his car through the glass storefront of a Verizon Wireless store in North Carolina, authorities said Friday, stunning shoppers during the dinner hour at an upscale mall.
Charles Michael Hager was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and damaging property after he drove into the store at a busy shopping center in Raleigh Thursday night, according to a police statement, per the AP.
A witness told a 911 operator that he saw Hager standing outside the store located between two popular restaurants, demanding that it reopen to help him with his broken phone.
"He was demanding to get his phone fixed," the unidentified caller said, later adding:
"He said: 'My damn phone's not working. I need help. Open this damn door."
A police news release said Hager first kicked the door, shattering glass, then drove his car through the storefront. Six employees were in the store, but no one was injured. The caller said a crowd of bewildered onlookers gathered around as the man got out of his car wearing a gray collared shirt and gray slacks and continued to yell.
The scene unfolded at North Hills Mall, an outdoor shopping center surrounded by pricey homes and several high-rise office buildings north of downtown.
The spread of mobile phones and cellular networks are facilitating easier access to financial services in hard-to-reach population and small businesses at low cost and risk in developing countries.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank Plc, Mr. Suleiman Abubakar, said this while delivering a paper as guest speaker at a breakfast roundtable organized by the Financial Services Group of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on deepening financial inclusion through data analytics and financial technology in Lagos recently.
Abubakar, who was represented by Sterling Bank’s Chief Information Technology Officer, Mr. Olayinka Oni, noted that in the context of financial inclusion, “Fintechs hold tremendous potential, challenging old business models with greater speed, accountability and efficiency at a cheaper cost.”
He said access to financial products and services were becoming more attainable than ever for consumers that live in rural locations or regions without the equipment and infrastructure of a modern economy due to the prevalence of mobile phones and cellular networks.
Abubakar said financial institutions and fintechs could objectively use data analytics to extend credit to consumers who previously had to contend with sometimes exploitative informal credit because they had no formal credit history.
He said it was essential for a country to have strong political commitment and coordination across relevant stakeholder groups in both the public and private sectors of the economy to achieve financial inclusion.
In addition, the country must put in place wide-reaching policies that promote responsible financial access, financial capability, innovative products and delivery mechanisms, the guest speaker said.
He stressed the impact of data on financial inclusion, saying as customer transactions around the world become increasingly digitized, data analytics can shed light on patterns such as how frequently and for what purposes customers use their accounts to provide some benefits for financially excluded customers.
“Benefits that can be obtained from this approach include insights on financing, accelerating customer product adoption, improved marketing effectiveness, and agent network optimization,” he said.

Xiaomi has officially unveiled four of its latest smartphone devices - Redmi Note 5a, Redmi Note 5a Prime, Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 plus in Nigeria and exclusively on Jumia Nigeria website on March 7th, 2018. The two smartphones, which run on Android 7.0 (Nougat) with an incredible battery life of 3080mAh, are essentially an upgrade of the Redmi Note 5.
Juliet Anammah, CEO of Jumia Nigeria disclosed this saying,

a. Phone restarts on its own

c. Phone does not charge after being plugged in
This is another common sign of a bad battery. If the phone doesn’t charge after being plugged in, there’s probably an issue with the battery. Here, the phone stays dead even after repeated attempts at charging it.

If the battery has started to deteriorate, the device won’t stay on for long. It will power up when you connect it to a power source but it won’t hold its charge. When this happens, you know it’s time to replace the battery.

From January 1, 2018, Whatsapp will not provide support for some smartphones.
This means some phone users will not be able to update to newer versions or enjoy new features of the software.
The affected smartphones include Blackberry 10, Windows Phone 8.0 or any smartphone running Blackberry OS.
“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.
“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone,” WhatsApp wrote in a blog post.
After pleading guilty to stealing two phones valued at N104,000, a 25-year-old unemployed man, Titi Seun, was on Thursday remanded in prison on the orders of an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
According to a ruling by the Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, the accused, whose residential address is unknown, is to remain behind bars in Kirikiri Prisons pending sentence at the next date of adjournment.
Prosecutor Clement Okuoimose had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 6 at Dopemu, Agege, Lagos.
He said the accused stole two phones valued at N104,000 property of Mr Samuel Ikenna., using a rope.
“The accused stole the complainant’s Samsung J7 valued at N96,000 and an itel phone worth N8,000 totalling N104,000.”
Okuoimose said the accused stole the complainant’s phones through the window.
“The complainant woke up from sleep and discovered that his two phones which he was charging had disappeared.
“He saw a long rope with nail which the accused used to remove the phones from the charger.
“The complainant called the phones several times but the accused refused to pick and he called one of the phones several days later and a lady picked it and told him that the owner was not around.
“The complainant told the lady to give him her own number in case he calls the owner’s number and it is not going through he can call her and that he has an important message for the owner of the phone,” he said.
“The lady gave the complainant her number and that led to the arrest of the accused.”
However, the accused who later confessed to the crime, attributed it to the handiwork of the devil as he pleaded for mercy.
The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes three years jail term as penalty.
The magistrate has fixed Jan. 10 for sentence.

It's a problem that is all too familiar to Apple's iPhone users: every time a new model of smartphone is released by the company, all previous models suddenly take a hit when it comes to speed and, consequently, performance. Whether rooted in iOS updates or degradation of the internal hardware components, several iPhone users have had enough and, according to TMZ, are taking legal action as a result.
The lawsuit has supposedly been filed by Stefan Bogdanovich, a Los Angeles man who is claiming that Apple's tactic of slowing down older iPhone models is making the lives of users who aren't willing to shell out the kind of cash needed for the newest devices difficult.
Bogdanovich has gone on record in the paperwork as saying that the company's method of slowing performance in older phone models in order to converse battery life was never something that users ever had a say in or agreed upon in any way. He wants to bring the issue to the fore legally on behalf of all of his fellow iPhone users who are disgruntled about the same problems.
Then, there's the moneymaking ploy that's at work here. Bogdanovich asserts that the slowdowns are generally just a ploy to get smartphone users to upgrade their devices, therefore allowing Apple to rake in that much more cash as a result. Coupled with the fact that products like the iPhone X aren't making having the best possible device any cheaper, the proposition of owning an iPhone is becoming an increasingly dicey one, according to him.

How to Participate Offline
