Users of the instant messaging app "Whatsapp" will no longer be able to forward messages to more than 20 people.
WhatsApp had previously introduced the ‘forward message indicator’ in chats to make it clear when a user has received a forwarded message.
The move is said to be targeted at fighting the spread of fake news, but, in Nigeria, it really is a double-edged sword.
More social networks and online platforms are said to be considering copying the move.
Brian Acton made a fortune selling a company he co-founded, WhatsApp, to Facebook for $16 billion, and now he’s joined the #DeleteFacebook movement.
Acton, who left WhatsApp this year to start is own foundation, joined the #DeleteFacebook trend on his Twitter, writing:

The hashtag started trending after it was revealed by Facebook that data of over 50 million users was misused in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections.
The company’s value had dropped $37 billion since the reveal.
According to The Verge, Acton, just last month, invested $50 million into signal, another instant messaging app.
From January 1, 2018, Whatsapp will not provide support for some smartphones.
This means some phone users will not be able to update to newer versions or enjoy new features of the software.
The affected smartphones include Blackberry 10, Windows Phone 8.0 or any smartphone running Blackberry OS.
“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.
“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone,” WhatsApp wrote in a blog post.
Some time ago, we had posted an article that talked about this feature in the testing phase. Normally, new features from WhatsApp are first launched into the beta app for testing before they are introduced into the stable version of the chat platform.
Luckily, the floating window feature has now graduated into the stable version of WhatsApp after weeks of testing. The new feature will allow users to continue enjoying video calls even after they exit the WhatsApp app. That is, a floating window will allow the call to continue even after the user jumps into another app. This can be quite useful, for instance, you can set a reminder on the calendar app to keep up with plans made via the video calls and many more use cases.
The catch however is that the new feature uses the Picture-in-picture functionality introduced in the latest Android 8.0 Oreo. This means that only devices that have been updated to Oreo will have access. Unfortunately, only a handful of them have that luxury right now.
Even worse, many users stand the risk of never having their gadgets never updated to Oreo at all. Hopefully the WhatsApp team comes up with a work-around to enable other android versions to join in on the fun.
Good news to all Nokia S40, BlackBerry 10 users and those on BB operating system. WhatsApp has once again been considerate and extended its support & continuous service on the aforementioned platforms till December 2018.
WhatsApp has been postponing the expiry of its messaging service on S40 Nokia phones, Blackberry operating system and BB10 platform close to 2 years now, and it has once again extended it service on these platforms till 31st of December 2018.
During the time of this publication, there's no news regarding this development from any Whatsapp officials. However you can confirm the deadline extension by navigating to settings >> about from your s40 or BlackBerry device, and you'll see details about it there.
WhatsApp extending its service on s40 & BBOS till 31st, Dec 2018 is certainly a great news. However, users on those platforms shouldn't fold their hands hoping for another re-extention, as WhatsApp has provided enough time for you all to upgrade to supported devices.
In fact, we should call this "WhatsApp Grace Period." Upgrade now to enjoy all amazing WhatsApp features like video calling, advanced file sharing, photo caption, and many more.
