A 33-year-old woman, Zainab Salisu, an internally displaced person in Maradun camp, Zamfara, has been delivered of a set of quadruplets — two males and two females.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Mrs Salisu, who hailed from Gidan Dan-Guntu village in Maradun District, gave birth on Sunday without complications.
Speaking on the delivery, the father of quadruplet, Malam Salisu Muhammad, told journalists before the delivery his wife only attended her antenatal care once at the Maradun General Hospital.
“Even then, her condition seemed normal but she could not get back to the hospital due to fear of attacks by bandits and so we managed her at home since this was not her first pregnancy
“We, however, noticed that this particular pregnancy was too big but since she has had seven deliveries including a set of twins, we paid less attention,” he explained.
He said the woman went into a brief labour in the early hours of Sunday and she was assisted by traditional birth attendants at the IDP, adding that when he reported the incident to the camp officials, they moved the mother and her quadruplet to Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, the state capital.
A medical personnel from Maradun Local Government who pleaded for anonymity told NAN that they decided to bring them to the hospital because “we believe they will receive better care.
NAN reports that Zaynab and her husband were among more than 12,000 people displaced from nearly 20 communities in five local government areas of Maru, Maradun, Zurmi, Shinkafi and Anka following nefarious activities of bandits in the last three months.
Zamfara State Police Command has reported that they averted an attempt by unknown gunmen to attack Dokolo village in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.
The command’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Administration, Mr Bukar Biu, said at a press briefing on Friday in Gusau that one of the attackers was killed in the encounter Police.
Biu said that the police responded after receiving a distress call from the area that armed bandits on motorcycles attempted to invade the village.
“Fortunately, a combined team of mobile policemen and vigilante group led by Divisional Police Officer, Tsafe Division quickly responded and engaged the bandits in a gun duel.
“They eventually empowered the bandits and forced them to beat a retreat back to the forest with possible bullet wounds.
“One of the bandits was killed and we recovered one AK-47 rifle and two operational motorcycles”, he said.
According to him, security has been beefed up within the area to forestall any violence or reprisal attack.
He reiterated the command’s efforts under the Police Commissioner Kenneth Ebrimson to ensure the protection of lives and properties of people in the state.
Biu appealed to members of the public to continue to cooperate with the police and other security agencies by providing useful information on criminals and their activities in their areas.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Monday arraigned the former governor of Zamfara State, Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi alongside three others before Justice Fatima Murtala of the Federal High Court sitting in Zamfara on a 5-count charge of Conspiracy and Money Laundering.
Others charged alongside Shinkafi are the former Minister of State, Finance, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, Aminu Ahmed Nahuche and Ibrahim Malaha.
The defendants allegedly conspired and received a cash payment of N450,000,000 part of the $115,000,000 that was allegedly distributed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke for the purpose of influencing the outcome of the 2015 general election.
One of the charges read that:
You Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, Aminu Ahmed Nahuche and Ibrahim Malaha on or about 27th, March 2018, at Gusau, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court conspired among yourselves to receive cash payment of the sum of N450,000,000 (Four Hundred and Fifty Million Naira Only) from Odia Akpotune without transacting through a financial institution and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 18(a) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act and punishable under 16(2)(b) of the same Act”.
Shinkafi arriving at the court
All the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.
Counsel to the prosecution Johnson Ojogbane requested the court for a trial date in view of the plea of the defendants.
The defence counsel J. C. Shaka moved a motion for bail asking the court to admit the defendants to bail pending the conclusion of the matter.
Subsequently, Ojogbane informed the court that the prosecution had filed counter affidavit praying the court to refuse bail.
Justice Murtala, after listening to the arguments between the parties, granted the defendants bail in the N5,000,000 each and two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court while the other must own a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court.
Both sureties shall be public or civil service not below grade level 16. The court also rules that the defendants deposit their recent passport photographs and international passports with the registrar.
The case has been adjourned to 27 and 28 June, 2018 for the commencement of trial while the defendants are remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of their bail terms.
President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, governors and ministers are to inaugurate multi-billion naira projects in Zamfara State as part of the 7th Anniversary of Governor Abdul’aziz Yari’s administration.
Chairman of the anniversary committee, Alhaji Lawal Liman, disclosed this at a press conference, in Gusau, on Wednesday.
Liman, who is the state Commissioner for Health, said about 109 projects comprising hospitals, roads, schools were expected to be inaugurated during the ceremonies.
“Even though the date for the president’s visit is not officially announced , but it would be made available to the public later.
“The Vice president is to start with the inauguration of the 61km Dauran-BirninMagaji-Kaura-Namoda road, township roads and semi urban water projects in Bakura and Zurmi local government areas this month.
“While, the schedules of president’s visit would be communicated later.
“We also have water, roads and electrification projects executed by the state governments at the new army brigade, Gusau,” he said
According to him,
“Other important personalities to visit the state during the ceremonies comprised Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, governors of Sokoto, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Katsina and Kano states.
“Others would be Sultan of Sokoto, former governors of the state, National Assembly members, religious and community leaders in the country, among others.”
President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Gusau, Zamfara State, directed security agencies to improve their strategies of intelligence gathering, surveillance and accuracy in deployments, and ensure that criminal activities are brought to an end across the country.
Accompanied by Governor Abdul’aziz Yari, in an interactive meeting with political leaders, traditional rulers, elders and victims of criminal attacks in Zamfara State, President Buhari assured all security agencies of improved conditions that will facilitate apprehending criminals that steal, maim and kill innocent Nigerians.
“As far as I am concerned, our security agencies have recorded some successes, but they need to do much more. They are not to oppress anyone, but they have to gather and send intelligence and warnings when something is about to happen,’’ he said.
The President commended the security agencies for eliminating a dreadful criminal, “Buhari general’’, who had for many years initiated killings and destruction of properties.
“Before “Buharin-daji”, who calls himself a general, there was a criminal who killed many people and he was killed; “Buharin–daji’’ has followed him and others like them should also follow,’’ he added.
President Buhari said the threats to lives and properties will be significantly reduced with improved relations among community leaders, citizens and the security agencies.
“I have come here to commiserate with you over loss of lives and properties. We will continue to do our best to improve the security situation. However, those committing atrocities live with you. Some of these people are not reported because you don’t trust the security outfits, instead you report back to the criminals. We should give priority to security’’ he said.
The President warned that the ongoing war against corruption will be reinvigorated and sustained until public officers, who abused their positions, faced the wrath of the law.
President Buhari told the elders and traditional rulers that properties that had been confiscated by security outfits from some suspected corrupt public officials will be sold out, after the completion of court procedures.
He urged Nigerians to take advantage of the ongoing reforms in the agricultural sector, pointing that the era of depending on petrol will one day come to an end.
On herdsmen attacks, the President said there was a need to revisit and review the old grazing area arrangements that guaranteed harmonious relationship between farmers and herdsmen, where differences were amicably resolved through the law without violence.
In his remarks, Governor Yari, who is also the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, said the state government had deployed resources that were initially designated for development into fighting criminal activities.
The governor, who commended the security outfits for working hard to protect the state, pleaded with the Federal Government to improve the funding of operations, increase the number of security men working in the state and reimburse the state for monies spent on some Federal Government projects like roads, which he said was a major priority in fighting criminals.
In his presentation, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Abdullahi Shinkafi, said the state faced three major criminal challenges of cattle rustling, armed banditry and abductions and demand for ransoms.
Listing out eight major flashpoints, the Secretary to the Government said 1,321 lives had been lost since 2011, while 1,881 people sustained various injuries from attacks, with about N14 billion spent on fighting the menace.
The traditional rulers, elders and leaders of the affected communities also pleaded with the government to ensure immediate security intervention in order to save lives.
The Zamfara State Police Command on Sunday killed a notorious kidnapper, arrested eight others and recovered arms.
Its commissioner, Mr Kenneth Embrimson, who displayed the corpse of the said kidnapper, told newsmen in Gusau that he was killed in a gun battle with security operatives.
According to him, the command had received a report that a gang of notorious bandits and kidnappers had stormed Ruwan-Gizo and Yartasha villages in Talata-Mafara Local Government Area, to kidnap one Bilyaminu Abdullahi.
“The Police quickly responded and laid ambush; after an intense gun battle that lasted for more than two hours, the victim, Bilyaminu Abdullahi, was rescued.
“One of the bandits was shot and killed, while another escaped with gunshot wounds.
“Two AK 47 rifles, 75 round of 7.62 MM and two motorcycles were recovered from the kidnappers,’’ he said.
Embrimson further said that a Police patrol team, on Feb. 24, arrested two persons – a suspected armed bandit and kidnapper – at Daraga and Dankurmi areas in Maru Local Government.
“A locally made gun and one round of 7.62 MM of AK 47 rifle were recovered from the suspects,’’ he said.
He said that the Police had earlier arrested five suspected kidnappers at Magarya village in Zurmi Local Government on Feb. 23, while another suspected kidnapper and an armed robber were arrested on Feb. 19.
The duo, he said, were arrested in Kabala and Yangaladima villages in Maradun Vand Maru Local Government.
He said that the command also arrested a suspected gun runner believed to be in charge of collecting ransoms for kidnappers.
“We recovered N2.6 million and 21 pieces of Nigerien currencies from the suspected gun runner,” he said.
