The Federal Government has inaugurated the board of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

The 14-member 5th National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG) has the responsibility to reposition the extractive industries in line with international best practices.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha noted that they were selected based on individual merit and track record.

The SGF said their appointment demonstrates President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of economic resources.

Mustapha charged the team to adhere strictly to the tenet of their mandate through effective implementation of Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

“Your mandate is to ensure effective EITI implementation in Nigeria by providing policy and strategic direction, guidance, monitoring and oversight to the EITI process in Nigeria”, he said.

The board comprises Olusegun Adeyemi Adekunle – Chairman (Retired Federal Permanent Secretary), NNPC Managing Director, Mele Kyari – Member (Representing National Oil & Gas Company); FIRS Chairman, Muhammad Nami – Member (Extractive Industry – Revenue Accountability); President, Nigeria Mining & Geosciences Society, Alabo Charles – Member (Extractive Industry – Professional Union).

Others are PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo – Member (Extractive Industries – Professional Union Industries); Lorenzo Fiorillo – Member (Chairman – OPTS / Oil & Gas Companies Rep); Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Oluwatoyin Akinlade – Member (Rep, Government Extractive Industries – Mining); Peter Egbule – Member (National Coordinator, Publish What You Pay / Civil Society Rep).

The list also include Bashir Bature Gafai – Member (North-West ); Iliya Gashinbaki – Member (North-East); Godwin Akor Ogwuche – Member (North-Central); Prof. Damilola Olawuyi – Member (South-West); Nze Joe Ibeh – Member (South-East); Awowoh Christian – Member (South-South); Ogbonnaya Orji – Member (Executive Secretary, NEITI).

In his remarks, Adekunle promised that the board would entrench transparency and accountability in the extractive industries.

The chairman assured of policy direction, monitoring, guidance and oversight to the NEITI secretariat to sustain its achievements since inception.

He said among others, the team would study the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) recently passed by the National Assembly to prepare response to the new dynamics expected in the industry and the economy.
