HOW TO KNOW WHEN YOU NEED A COACH
Having a coach is not peculiar to football alone. Those in
the corporate world also have some form of coaching at every level of progress
in their career. Coaching can also come in form of consultation, mentorship or
other relationships
that are geared toward helping an individual find strength
and stick to his/her core values.
Just as it is in football, the coach does not always have to
be a footballer himself. Also, the coach does not plant the talent in the
individual footballer. In fact, the footballer needed a coach because he is
talented in the first place. The coach’s job then is not to plant the talent
but to help the individual with the talent to develop and utilize his/her
talents maximally.
The person with the talent needs the coach as an “outside
eyes” – someone who helps him/her to put things in perspective, helps and holds
him/her accountable and at times, assists him/her in making critical decisions
or in formulating a plan of action that is intended to yield a specified
result.
So here are the questions to ask yourself in order to tell
if you need a coach:
- Do I desire to be better in what I am already doing?
- Do I feel like I need someone to hold me accountable?
- Do I always feel the need to share my challenges with someone who is not just willing to listen but also is capable of helping me find answers?
- Did I just got promoted and needed some kind of training to be able to handle the new challenges that comes with the new promotion?
- Do I feel like there is something great within me but don’t know how to reach deep within and bring it out?
- Have I thought about improving my self esteem or developing certain character traits that required some kind of assistance?
- Do I have dreams and aspirations but lack the experience to pursue them?
- Do I work better when someone is holding me accountable than when am working alone?
GETTING A COACH is not always easy. If you are lucky, you
know a lot of people who may assist you by mentoring you but if you in the
majority you probably don’t know anybody you can talk to.
Every coach must not be an expert in your industry therefore
you must endeavor to choose a coach with some background or experience in your
industry (especially if your objectives for the coaching is related to or has
to do with the industry you work in). Endeavor to choose a coach with relevant
experience and expertise. This will give you an edge. Finding coaches in your
industry should be easy if you are actively involved in the networking
experience of the industry and of course if you are willing to go out of your
way in seeking for who will train you.
The only time it is appropriate to choose a coach without
looking at specific qualifications or experiences is if you are only choosing
the coach for personal growth and development. At this point you really need
someone who can show you how to develop and become a better person. As such
what the person read in school or which industry they are is not an issue. What
you need is to choose a coach with proven record of helping people. Someone
that is passionate about helping people become better than they were and
someone who has your time.
A TRAINED COACH is more or less an expert in helping and
assisting you set goals, makes commitment and create plans that are necessary
for their achievement. He may guide you using his experience and materials. His
job is not always to tell you what to do but to help you discover for yourself
what you should do and do it. A trained coach is not always an industry related
coach but he/she is certainly a person trained to help people get better. They
have been trained to handle human beings and they are usually equipped with
incredible materials and technologies for helping people become better and
improve faster.
Everyone needs a coach. Whether as a mentor, guidance,
consultant, god-father name them. The primary responsibility of your coach is
that he/she must be interested in your development and success.
Again, a trained coach is a professional or an expert at
helping you make better choices, holding you accountable and assisting you to
stick to your life mission. He’s been trained on how to do this.
