The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi has placed a ban on the use of long
hijabs in NYSC camps during orientation exercises around the country because of
Nigeria's lingering security crisis.
The DG made this known while speaking yesterday in Abuja
during a courtesy visit by the League of Muslims Youth in Da’awah. The National
Coordinator of the league, Barrister Lukman Hassan said their visit was because
of the order banning female Muslims corps members from wearing hijabs in
orientation camps across the states. Hassan requested for a review to allow
every citizen their rights to religion and expression.
Reacting, the DG of NYSC said it was unfortunate that in
recent times, terrorist use ladies who wore long hijabs, plant IEDs under it to
kill innocent people. He said the NYSC respects
the religion and tribe of every Nigerian but had the responsibility of
protecting the lives of corps members under their watch.
Olawumi urged the female corps members to use the short
hijabs while in camp, as he urged the League to help spread the message across
to all Muslims coming for the national youth service.
