The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase has ordered the suspension of promotion screening of some police officers who acquired higher qualification while in service. Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole said the decision of the police chief is based on allegations of malpractice and allusions over the screening process.
She said the decision came after a meeting between the Police Management Team (PMT) and the Police Service Commission (PSC). She added that Arase said the screening exercise will be put on hold until consolations with the commission is concluded ads the PSC has decided to engage the services of an independent examination body for the process.
“The police high command and Police Service Commission have decided to engage the services of independent assessor for neutrality and free exercise, when the exercise is completed, each State of the federation will have equal number of representation,” Kolawole said.
She also said that the police chief has called on all police officers qualified for screening and subsequent promotion to be patient and ensure they attend the oncoming screening exercise to be scheduled by the independent body.
“He assured that all qualified Policemen will be considered appropriately,” she said.
On Tuesday, December 16, 2014, the former inspector general of police, Suleiman Abba directed all police inspector and other rank and file of the police force with university and other tertiary educational qualifications be accessed for promotion. This mostly affects those who obtained higher qualifications while in service
The officers with Abba’s directive are expected to be promoted to the cadre of senior officers to help boost morale of the police workforce.
