Officials and players of the victorious National U-23 Team, Dream Team VI, who are the African Champions of the U-23 Cup of Nations are expected to arrive the country today, Monday. According to the team’s itinerary, the team will depart from the Leopold Senghor Int’l Airport on Monday at 3 a.m. aboard an Arik flight. The team is expected to arrive at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos at 9 a.m. and is expected to board another Arik flight to Abuja.
It was revealed that each player of the U-23 team, was paid the naira equivalent of $4,000, after they defeated Algeria 2-1 to win their first ever U-23 AFCON title in Dakar, Senegal.
The total paid to each player was $12,000. They received $4,000 for the final, $3,000 for the semi-final, $2,000 for the opening day win against Mali and $1,000 each for draws against Egypt and Algeria.
"We have been paid our winning bonus for the final," a player confirmed to AfricanFootball. Coach Samson Siasia was paid double the amount each player got.
A statement posted on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), website, says the three foreign-based players invited for the championship, Captain Azubuike Okechukwu and the duo of Junior Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi who were at the front line of the team’s attack, have since returned to their various clubs.
