Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu
The Deputy Senate President on Nigeria, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has spoken out on the continued detention of the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh. In a stern warning, the Senator revealed that the Federal Government is trying its best to gag the mouthpiece of the opposition and cripple the PDP.
Sen. Ekweremadu warned the All Progressives Congress, APC led government to be cautious against the trampling of the opposition and total disregard for the rule of law in the guise of anti-corruption war as he said the development is a source of worry for our fledging democracy. He stated that the country was fast descending into authoritarianism, adding that it spells doom on the nation’s democracy.
In a statement signed yesterday by his Special Adviser, Media, Uche Anichukwu, Senator Ekweremadu said although his party is in support for a genuine anti-graft crusade, he however said such a crusade led by the APC has become a calculated attempt to decimate and silence the opposition, while members of the ruling party with serious corruption allegations go about their businesses.
Sen. Ekweremadu said,
"the continued detention of the PDP mouthpiece was an attempt to gag the opposition and therefore unhealthy for democracy.
“An anti-graft trap that catches only members of the opposition and those with axe to grind with the government of the day is compromised.”
Sen. Ekweremadu called on all lovers of democracy and rule of law to resist the dictatorial and undemocratic situation being introduced by the APC-led government where people are held in custody against the directives of the courts and laws of the land, insisting that there would be no justice without the rule of law.
