A massive explosion rocked the Central Bank of Nigeria in Calabar, Cross River State at about 12.30 pm today, Friday. According to unconfirmed reports, about 10 people were killed and 30 injured. The explosion was not caused by a bomb as was initially feared. It is suspected the explosion was caused by gas from the central air conditioning unit.
The Nation reports that the Acting Inspector General of Police, Zone 6, Calabar, Baba-Adisa Bolanta, who also inspected the scene, said the explosion was suspected to be from gas from the central air-conditioning unit.
“This is just an initial assessment, and it is not confirmed yet. It is when a final result has been given that we will confirm what really happened,” he said.
The massive explosion left parts of the bank building damaged and glasses shattered. Staff relatives were seen outside the gate shocked and some crying demanding to see their loved ones and colleagues. The area has been cordoned off by Men of the Police, Army, Navy, Civil Defence and other paramilitary organizations who are now at the scene of the incident.
Fire trucks and security operatives are working hard in the premises of the bank to convey casualties to the hospital. The Commissioner of Police, Henry Faidairo is also at the venue of the incident to see first hand what actually happened.
