The Argentine defender was seen snacking on the piece of fruit while on the Old Trafford pitch during the Europa League win over Rostov.
Mourinho explained that it was simply a case of the player needing some extra energy.
He said on BT Sport:
“I don’t know if you have been tired at any time in your life?
“I was tired many times and I know what are the limits of the body and when the body needs anything… anything!
“The player asked for a banana and it is not to laugh at all, it is to respect the players and their limits. They gave absolutely everything.”
United advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a 2-1 aggregate triumph over the Russians.
