We should have shut up our mouths over the Senator Dino Melaye degree he allegedly got from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 2000 since the VC of the university has told a senate hearing two days ago that the noisome and boisterous senator actually graduated from the school, but his bland statement "confirming" that the controversial senator did indeed graduate from the school leaves many other questions unanswered, and this has merely deepened the controversy. How do we explain the following inconsistencies?
1. The Examinations Officer of the university is on record saying Dino Melaye did not graduate from the university but we now have the university's VC saying Dino Melaye actually graduated in 2000. So who should we believe between the VC and the Exams Officer who has such records in his office?
2. The Punch newspaper of Sunday, March 26, 2017 exclusively reported that they searched the ABU Alumni website dating back from 1980 till date but could not find the name of Dino Melaye as a graduate of the school. According to the paper, they searched also for Daniel Jonah Melaye, which is the name he got admitted into the school with but it still did not show up among the university's graduates. So, what's up? Could both Sahara Reporters and Punch be wrong in their investigation and reportage of this story?
3. At the senate "investigative hearing", Dino Melaye reiterated that he graduated from the school in 2000 but that he has not collected his certificate since then till now, and that's why he could not present it for sighting by the committee members. Good. But will this committee insist on seeing this certificate before they wind up their hearing or not? In any investigative hearing, this is a crucial piece of evidence that cannot be overlooked or wished away!
4. I thought the senators would ask the VC how a top of the shelf university like A.B.U could admit a student with P8 in English, P8 in Maths, and P8 in Geography to study a degree in Geography but they didn't. Well, like I said earlier, it is an abnormal senate that appears unwilling to ask forensic questions, especially when it concerns one of their own!
5. And if both Harvard University and the London School of Economics have openly disowned Dino Melaye's claim to their degrees, then isn't this proof that he has a notorious record of presenting fake documents to deceive Nigerians and our public institutions like the National Assembly? Has this senate committee extended its investigations to these schools, or has the committee invited the schools like they did to the VC of A.B.U.?
6. Senator Dino Melaye knew that he was going to appear at a senate "investigative hearing" over a matter principally tied to him, but he "conveniently" forgot to come with the sworn court affidavit and newspaper cutting that proved he has changed his name from Daniel Jonah Melaye to Dino Melaye several years ago. Why? And is this "investigative hearing" committee going to disregard or waive this critical piece of evidence? Which year in particular did Daniel Jonah Melaye transform to Dino Melaye?
7. I don't want to dwell on the senator's bio data that suggests he was born in 1970 but finished his primary school in 1974, which means he started school right from his mother's womb.
This could be a mistake when he was typing his CV or profile. It will help him if he corrects it soonest.
