Ambitious Nollywood director, Kunle Afolayan has released the trailer of one of the three Africa Magic-commissioned films which he finished shooting recently. Omugwo tells the story of Omotunde, a young civil engineer, married to Raymond, an OAP (On Air Radio Personality), who has just given birth.
Coloured by their different cultural backgrounds, their mothers-in-law forcefully move in with the couple to perform the Igbo child care rite called, Omugwo.

But instead of relieving their children of the burden of childcare, the mothers’ rivalry complicates life for the young couple to comical effects. It features veteran actress Patience Ozokwor as well as Ayo Adesanya, Omowunmi Dada and Ken Erics.
Apart from the fact that this film is as close to limited cast as you can probably find for this type of story, here are the things we learned from watching the trailer on repeat for 15 minutes.
1. The Film’s Duration
As is characteristic of Africa Magic films and TV films generally, do not expect a The CEO-length from this film. It is meant to be short, unlike the slightly long trailer.

‘Omugwo’ is meant to be short

2. Afolayan knows how to get good Directors of Photography for his projects

In Omugwo, we are introduced to Ifeanyi Iloduba who from what we see in the trailer did a very good job shooting this film.
The National Film Institute, Jos graduate isn’t entirely new in film circles but he hasn’t become a household name amongst Nollywood audiences yet.

3. Ayo Adesanya will do well to keep up with Patience Ozokwor in this film

Ayo Adesanya

Afolayan’s decision to cast Ayo Adesanya in a newbie grandmother role opposite Patience Ozokwor is an interesting one. An experiment which I am curious to see if it pays off.
Ozokwor is much at home in the grandmother who is trying to dominate in her son’s house role. But, as good as Adesanya is, she is already at a slight disadvantage.
But so far so good in the trailer, it looks like extra attention is paid to her acting.

4. Other choice of casting

Omowunmi Dada and Ken Erics in ‘Omugwo’

Despite the concern raised in the point above, it’s good to see Afolayan stick to his radical casting style.
He is one director who does not enjoy casting trending faces in his films.
And if like me, you get bored seeing the same faces trending in Nollywood films over previous months, then this is another escape for you.
