All is not well at the Camp Nou as Neymar has sensationally threatened to quit Barcelona should the club appoint Juan Carlos Unzue as their new manager. Unzue, an assistant to Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, had emerged as one of the likely candidates to take over in the summer.
But that may not be the case anymore as Neymar has reportedly issued an ultimatum to the club to choose between him and the 50-year-old former Celta Vigo coach.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the relationship between the pair went south on Friday after a spat at the training ground. It is understood that Unzue warned Neymar to focus on his football, and went as far as suggesting the Brazil captain could suffer the same premature dip that blighted Ronaldinho’s career at Barcelona, Express writes.
The comparison with two-time world footballer of the year Ronaldinho’s decline drew the ire of Neymar, who later said “if he stays, I’m leaving,” in reference to Unzue’s possible appointment.
In the event of Unzue’s confirmation as coach, Neymar, 25, would have no shortage of suitors to take him away from the Camp Nou as he’s widely regarded as one of the best footballers in the world today.
European giants such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have already tried and failed to land his signature, a task United manager Jose Mourinho likened to “cracking a safe.”
Earlier this week, a court in Spain ruled that Neymar is to stand trial on charges of irregularities over his switch to Barcelona from Santos in 2013.
