Dallas has hired its first female police chief, Renee Hall, to lead the police department. Hall, currently the deputy chief of the Detroit Police Department, will take over the Dallas Police department in September.

Her appointment means women of color now hold the top three law enforcement positions in Dallas County. She joins Sheriff Lupe Valdez, the first openly Gaey Latina to be elected Dallas County sheriff, and District Attorney Faith Johnson, the first black woman appointed to the position.

Hall, the daughter of a murdered Detroit police officer, is also the first woman to hold the position in the department’s 136-year history.
“I am honored to be chosen to lead the Dallas Police Department at this critical time in its history, I look forward to building on the successes of the past, preserving community trust and ensuring the safety of our officers and the entire Dallas community,” she said in her statement.
