One thousand, nine hundred and thirty-three NYSC Batch “A” Stream Two corps members posted to the state have been trained on eleven different skills for self employment.

The training which took place at the Umunya Temporary Orientation Camp also featured exhibition of some of their hand works.

As part of activities lined-up for the two weeks orientation programme by the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC for corps members across the country, a nine day intensive training on different skills acquisition has also been introduced, such as Agro-allied, ICT, Education, Environment, automobile and beed making as well as food processing and preservation, Culture and Tourism, Power and Energy among others.

Addressing the corps members during the closing ceremony of the training, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, Mr. Afam Mbanefo, said every youth should gear towards entrepreneurship, financial literacy and understand the economics of whatever they do.
Mr. Mbanefo urged corps members who choose Agriculture as their skill to form co-operative society and work with the Ministry to develop their skills further.

The State Coordinator NYSC, Mr. Oluesgun Olawale said the skill acquisition training is aimed at making the corp members self-employed, employer of labour and not job seekers.

Mr. Olawale who noted that the Scheme is partnering with Bank of Agriculture, Central Bank and others to assist the corp members with loans to the tune of one million naira to establish after their service year stated that they use their NYSC discharge certificate as collateral.

In their separate speeches, some of the corp members, Dr. Gift Nwanaga from Abia, Shiri Obadiah from Nasarawa State and Samuel Nweze from Ebonyi State who chose different enterprises under Agro-Allied as their skill, while thanking the NYSC for the training which they described as an eye opener, promised to make a living through it, employ more people and contribute to food sufficiency in the country.
