The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has given an approval for the commencement of commercial operations of the Abuja Light rail project.
At the weekend, a seven-member technical team from the corporation was in Abuja on a fact-finding mission to ascertain the readiness of rail Project for commercial operations.
The team visited the stations and the rolling stockyard boarding the newly acquired train coaches and also received briefs from the chief resident engineer on the level of completion of the project.
Speaking at the end of the visit, the team leader, Mr Akin Osinowo, explained that the visit was a follow up to the previous one to determine the readiness of the Abuja rail system.
Osinowo added that the visit was also to ascertain if the rail is ready for passenger operations, especially as it relates to safety, engineering and repairs, operation, management and other issues, in line with the Nigerian Railway Act of 1955 and in accordance with global best practices.
He expressed satisfaction at the level of development and work completion and assured the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) that the rail system would receive all technical and regulatory support from the corporation at every level of its operation.
Responding, on behalf of the transportation secretariat, the director of BRT and transport regulation, Engineer Wilson Unogwu assured the team that the administration would constantly interact with the corporation to ensure a seamless take off of Abuja Light Rail Mass Transit.
