Major ethnic groups in Rivers State have vowed to ensure the continuity of power rotation in the political landscape of Rivers in order to take power from the Upland section of the State.
This is as stakeholders from the Kalabari and Ogoni ethnic nationalities of the State have agreed to work together to ensure that power rotates to the Riverine section of the state in the next political dispensation.
Former Niger-Delta agitator and Leader of Sociopolitical Pressure Group, Kengema Unity Forum, Ambassador Sobomabo Jackrich, fondly known as ‘Egberipapa’ led other stakeholders of the Kalabari Kingdom at the strategic meeting between the two ethnic groups, held in Degema Local Government Area.
He said the glaring realities of political marginalization and lopsided development of the state has informed the need for the Ogonis and the Kalabaris to work together to achieve their political and economic freedom.
According to him, “It is imperative for us the Kalabaris and our Ogoni brothers to have this treaty in order to form a political bloc in order to enthrone a God fearing and credible leadership in Rivers State as election can only be won by majority.
“It is only fair to have a riverine and most specifically the Kalabari to have a shot at the Governorship seat of Rivers State.
“As I asserted earlier, the issue of upland/riverine power rotation has become very necessary following growing concerns of concentration of development in mostly a section of the state.
“For instance, we have seen the construction of eight flyover bridges cited in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor”.
On his part, ex-warlord and freedom fighter, Mujahid Asari Dokubo said political freedom of the two major ethnic groups of the State was inevitable as they had agreed to work in synergy.
