The ‘top six’ English clubs – Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United – have begun the process of pulling out of the European Super League.

This reversal happens only 48 hours after Sunday’s announcement.

The Premier League teams had confirmed they were among 12 clubs planning to break away from the UEFA Champions League.

But City was the first of the clubs to make a brief statement: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that it has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League.”

In their statement, Arsenal “apologised” to their fans, insisting: “It was never our intention to cause such distress, however when the invitation to join the Super League came, while knowing there were no guarantees, we did not want to be left behind to ensure we protected Arsenal and its future.”

Liverpool said its involvement “has been discontinued” while Manchester United said they withdraw from the deal.

In a statement, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: “We regret the anxiety and upset caused by the ESL proposal.”

Chelsea, the first team to have reportedly made a decision, announced their withdrawal late Tuesday.

In a statement released late Tuesday, the Super League reacted by saying: “We are reconsidering the appropriate steps, in order to reshape the project”.
