Following the outcome of the just concluded local government election in Ogun State, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has filed charges against the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the three-man caretaker committee of the APC in the state.

The NNPP also dragged to court the 20 elected chairmen who emerged from the Saturday’s polls.

In an originating summon, the NNPP alleged that the APC had no locus standi to contest the elections, on the basis that the “party had dissolved its state working committee in December 8, 2020.”

The claimant also stated that the Ogun State chairman of the APC did not sign the forms of the candidates of the party.

“The caretaker committee set up by the 2nd defendant, upon the dissolution of the elected state working committee of the 2nd defendant in Ogun State by the National Executive Committee on December 8, 2020, has no lawful powers to administer the affairs of the 2nd defendant in Ogun State.

“The emergence of the 4th to 6th defendants as the chairman and members of the caretaker committee of the 2nd defendant in Ogun State is void, and no action can be founded on it.

“The state Chairman of the 2nd defendant did not sign the nomination forms of the 3rd defendants before submission to the 1st defendant on the date stipulated in the time table and schedule of activities for the July 24, 2021 local government chairmanship election,” the summons read in part.

In his words, the Chairman of the party in Ogun, Olaposi Oginni, prayed that all the candidates of the APC be disqualified, while those of the NNPP be declared winners of the elections.

“What the APC has been celebrating will definitely be short-lived. We have taken our case to court and we have prayed that all the candidates of the APC be disqualified and our own candidates be announced as the winners of the last Saturday election in Ogun State.

“If the APC is popular in Ogun State, why don’t they come to the election and allow a level playing field? What happened last Saturday in Ogun was never an election, but a charade and an embarrassment,” he stated.

Recall that Governor Dapo Abiodun had inaugurated the new Chairmen on Monday, describing their election as free, fair and credible.
