The death of the former Sole Administrator of Ekiti State, Gen. Tunji Olurin (rtd) has continued to generate reactions from dignitaries across Ogun State, where the deceased hailed from.
On Saturday, it was reported that the former Oyo State military Governor died in Lagos after an illness.
In statements signed separately and made available to DAILY POST, former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun and his closest rival in the 2019 election, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade mourned the passage of the 76-year-old Ilaro indigene.
According to Amosun, Olurin was a fine officer of the Nigerian Army who served selflessly and committedly in several positions, especially as Commander of the 1st Mechanized Brigade, Minna; General Officer Commanding of the 3rd Armoured Division, Jos; and Field Commander of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) Peacekeeping Force in Liberia.
Amosun said the deceased would be remembered for the various achievements recorded as the military Governor of Oyo and the Sole Administrator of Ekiti, adding that his involvement in politics was noteworthy, especially when he contested the 2011 governorship election in Ogun.
In his words, Gov Abiodun expressed shock that Olurin died at a time when his knowledge was mostly needed to tackle the security challenges facing the nation.
Abiodun explained that the late General put Ogun State and Nigeria on the global map with his exploits when he served as the ECOMOG Commander in Liberia.
The Governor described Olurin’s death as a painful loss, saying, “We shall continue to remember the late General for his meritorious service to his fatherland.”
Likewise, Akinlade recalled that Olurin’s political sojourn was brief, yet, impactful.
While saying the former military Governor would not be forgotten anytime soon, Akinlade stated that “he stood for what he believed and strived for the political emancipation of the Yewa/Awori region.”
“As I join other well meaning Nigerians and citizens of Ogun State to mourn our dear General Olurin, I implore Almighty God to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest while we take solace in a life well spent,” Akinlade stated
