Residents of Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, have raised the alarm over possible outbreak of communicable diseases in Jalingo metropolis.

DAILY POST reports that this is necessitated by the daily emergence of heaps of refuse dumps taking over the streets in the capital State.

Wondering why the government has not deemed it fit to address the situation, residents, who bared their minds to DAILY POST, expressed fear of the possible outbreak of cholera and other diseases.

Citing the outbreak of cholera in some states of the federation, especially in the neighbouring Adamawa State, they urged the government to take immediate action.

According to Bala Aliyu “if nothing positive is done by the state government to evacuate all these heaps of refuse dumps scattered all over the streets of Jalingo, then we are in for trouble.”

Viewing the state as “one of the dirtiest states in the country” he said “it is so sad that our leaders are doing nothing positive to redeem the image of our dear state.”

Meanwhile, a top government functionary who is also worried over the situation, said “the only time our streets wear a new look is when we are expecting major visitors.”

The official who does not want his name to be made public, told our correspondent that “the last time our government tried to keep some of these streets neat, was when they were preparing to host the northeast governors forum meeting,” adding that, “since then, nothing has been done to improve the situation.”

At the Ministry of Environment, our correspondent noticed that most of the trucks that ought to be used in evacuating the refuse dumps are all grounded.

An official of the ministry, who also pleaded for anonymity, claimed that the government has been denying all the ministries, departments and agencies their monthly subvention.
