The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Wednesday continued the demolition of over 350 structures in Iddo Sarki, a community near the University of Abuja.

The Iddo Sarki community, which is located just a few kilometres from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and the University of Abuja, has been taken over by some investors who built students’ hostels and hotels.

Comrade Ikharo Attah, the Chairman, FCT Ministerial Committee on City Sanitation, stated that the demolition exercise was part of a plan to keep Abuja from becoming a slum.

Attah said the exercise was critical to keeping the sanitation pace up, as the number of illegalities registered in the area had risen to dangerous levels.

He noted that there was no relenting on the proposed demolition of illegal structures at Mpape community as owners of illegal structures have been given enough time and notices.

Attah added that the FCTA will also not pay any compensation to the victims who contravened extant laws by building illegally.

He, however, urged victims to seek justice against the sellers of the illegal land.

Recall that the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) had earlier called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammed Bello to suspend the continuous demolition of houses in the nation’s capital pending the investigation of the petition by the natives of Abuja. The commission said it had received petitions from the original owners of Abuja over the alleged illegal demolition of their properties.
