Suspected armed robbers have reportedly abandoned an AK50 rifle after a serious exchange of gun fire with Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad along Ibusa/Ogwashi-Uku/Issele Azagba road in Delta State.
The AK50 rifle with breach no NA48333 contained a magazine loaded with nineteen rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
It was learnt that the RRS Commander and his team on arrival at the road after the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, came across a group of four young men who emerged from the bush but on noticing the presence of the operatives, ran back into the bush.
The RRS operatives gave them a hot chase which led to exchange of gun fire.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali confirmed the report at a press briefing in Asaba.
He said, “However, realizing that the police had upper hand against them, they threw away one AK50 rifle with breach no NA48333 containing a magazine loaded with nineteen rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
“Manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing.”
