1. The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, says he took over at a very difficult time. Speaking when he visited Governor Bello Masari of Katsina State, Baba highlighted some of the challenges the force is confronting, saying that 20,000 new policemen will soon be recruited to boost the capacity of the force.
2. The Military High Command, on Thursday, said it has handed over a total number of 565 Boko Haram terrorists to the Borno State Government. Brig.-Gen. Benard Onyeuko, Acting Director, Defence Media Operations, who announced this while addressing journalists at Defence Headquarters in Abuja, said the terrorists were released to the government for further management after thorough profiling.
3. The Police Command in Benue State on Thursday rescued Dr Godwin Kwanga of Geography Department, Benue State University, who was kidnapped on Tuesday in Makurdi. This is contained in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Sewuese Anene, and made available to newsmen in Makurdi.
4. The Enugu State House of Assembly, on Thursday, passed the open grazing prohibition bill into law. The bill scaled through the third reading after a clause by clause consideration. The passage came in line with the September 1 deadline issued by the Southern Governors for an end to open rearing of cattle.
5. Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the number 7 shirt on his return to Manchester United, the club confirmed on Thursday evening. The 36-year-old wore the jersey during his first stint at the club from 2003 to 2009, before leaving for Real Madrid.
6. Leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have said about N1 trillion worth of stolen funds and assets have been recovered since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in 2015. In a statement on Thursday, a former National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Lanre Issa-Onilu; member of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Barr Ismail Ahmed and other stakeholders of the parry said high profile recoveries were made from 2015 to date.
7. Former Senate President, Ken Nnamani says the All Progressives Congress (APC) will take over South-East states by 2023. He made the declaration in Enugu on Thursday during the APC South-East Zonal Stakeholders meeting.
8. The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it impounded 4,138 (50kg) bags of smuggled rice and 592 jerry cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in the month of August. The command also confirmed the seizure of 830 cartons of frozen poultry products, 15 vehicles, used foreign clothes, bags, shoes, illicit drugs and others.
9. The Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee of the All Progressives Congress, on Thursday, ordered state chapters of the party to go ahead with the local government congresses scheduled for Saturday. This came barely 24 hours after a Delta State High Court sitting in Asaba issued an order restraining Buni from parading himself as the chairman of the committee. The Secretary of the CENCPC, Senator John Akpanudoedehe addressed newsmen yesterday.
10. No fewer than 5,890 members of Boko Haram have surrendered to troops in the Northeast following intensive bombardment of their hideouts, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), has said. Acting Director, Defence Media Operations (DMO), Brig-Gen. Ben Onyeuko, who released the information yesterday, said the kinetic and non-kinetic approaches adopted in the prosecution of the counterinsurgency war were yielding fruits.
