A lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Dr. Usman Lukeman, on Tuesday, said the ban on motorcycles and restrictions of tricycles by the Kaduna State government would impact negatively on the people and not the bandits terrorising residents of the state.

Recall that, the Kaduna State government on September 24, 2021, banned commercial and private motorcycles as a measure towards tackling banditry

However, Dr. Lukeman in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST in Kaduna on Tuesday disagreed with the belief that the ban on motorcycles and restrictions of tricycles in the state would reduce banditry.

According to him, the ban would only create more hardship, more criminals and add more unbearable pains in the lives of the residents of the State.

“For the past three weeks of the ban, many people are suffering more. There are some who cannot walk two kilometres without the aid of motorcycles, or tricycles. Some businesses depended on those vehicles. Since the ban, hardship has increased, but bandits continue to Kidnap people.

“Just, yesterday night, bandits Kidnapped students of Catholic school in Jema’a LGA. Three days ago, they stormed gGoni Gora. There is hardly a day that passes without the incident of kidnapping. Most kidnappers have changed the modus operandi of their Kidnapping due to government announcement.

“Yes, markets are closed because bandits usually buy foodstuff from those bush markets. But, they often demand cooked food from parents of their abductors,” he said.

He said network operators have ceased their network in some areas or local governments that are prone to banditry. But kidnappers have also changed their strategies of communication.

“The only effect of cut in network on bandits, is to reduce immediate publicity of their evil act,” he said.

He further suggested that since bandits cannot operate successfully without informants, the best way for government is to try to identify the informants, and deal with them decisively.

” I think what government should do is to increase the security manpower, have constant meeting with local rulers who are close to the people. Government should make it mandatory for the local chiefs to monitor their subjects closely with a view to identify the bad eggs among them.

He also appealed to Malam El-rufai to review the restrictions and ban so that residents in the State could feed their families and take care of their loved ones since most of them rely on motorcycles and tricycles as sources of income for their families.
