The Vice-Chancellor, Istiqama University Kano, Professor Salisu Shehu has said that health inequality is worsening by the day in the northeastern region.
The VC frowned at the situation on Monday when he delivered a speech at the inauguration ceremony of Al- Mu’arif College of Health Science and Technology Potiskum, Yobe State established by the Jama’atul Izalatul Bidi’a wa’ ikamatussunna, (JIBWIS).
He tasked stakeholders in education, wealthy individuals and politicians in the north, especially the northeast to wake up from their slumber and improve the health system in the area.
Prof. Shehu added that the Northeast has the highest rate of maternal deaths in Nigeria, hence more needs to be done in order to arrest the situation.
Earlier, Yobe State Governor and Chairman, APC Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni explained that education is one of the most important aspects of human life.
Represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, Buni noted that the establishment of the higher institution of learning in the health sector will add value to the healthcare sector as it will complement government’s efforts in producing the much-needed manpower for the sector.
He commended the effort of the JIBWIS towards propagating Islamic education and now providing health education in the fields of pharmacy technician, health information, environmental health technician and nutrition.
Gov. Buni enjoined management of the first private health institution in the state to abide by all the rules and regulations governing its accreditation and stick to the accredited courses only.
On the motive behind establishing the institution, the National Chairman of Jama’atul Izalatul Bidi’a Was Ikamatussunnah, Dr. Abdullahi Bala Lau who is also the Chairman Board of Directors of the college, said Islam considers science as an essential prerequisite for human survival and the second source of knowledge for Muslims faithful.
