Manchester United and Arsenal legends,Paul Scholes and Ian Wright have slammed David de Gea, branding him ’embarrassing’ for his role in Arsenal’s opening goal during the Premier League clash on Thursday.
Emile Smith Rowe gave the Gunners the lead in the 13th minute, after David de Gea went down after a corner.
Replays showed De Gea was stamped on by team-mate Fred, but play went on and Smith Rowe slammed home from the edge of the box with the Spanish goalkeeper still on the floor.
Referee Martin Atkinson, appeared to be considering intervening but eventually awarded the goal after making contacts with VAR.
“That’s embarrassing,” Scholes told Premier League productions. ‘You protect your goal, you do anything to stop a goal.
“To turn away, to not even look, there’s clearly nothing wrong with him. He’s done himself.
“I don’t think there’s much wrong with it. De Gea should be there, protecting his goal at all times. It doesn’t look that bad to me. The goal had to stand.”
Wright added: “When you see David de Gea after the goal, he’s so incensed he sprints after the referee.
“My problem with that is there’s not enough seriously wrong with him to go down. For me, that’s embarrassing.
“De Gea should be getting up after that challenge trying to save it and then go down if there is something wrong with you.”
