Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, has criticized the club’s manager, Mikel Arteta, for substituting his captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the Gunners’ Premier League 3-2 loss to Manchester United on Thursday night.
Arteta took Aubameyang off on 79 minutes for Alexandre Lacazette as a goal from Bruno Fernandes and a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo gave Man United all three points against the visitors.
But Henry could not understand Arteta’s reasoning for benching Aubameyang with his team, looking for a crucial goal during the encounter at Old Trafford.
“One thing I couldn’t understand is Aubameyang is your captain, he’s your goal scorer. You put him as the captain,” Henry said on Amazon Prime.
“Twenty minutes to go, you are losing 3-2 and you take him off.
“I have never come across this situation where you are 3-2 away from home and you need a goal and you take your captain off the field and you know he can score you goals.
“So something is not right there.
“I don’t mind if you take [him] off, if you know the situation was kind of a bit different, but that’s your go-to player, your talisman.
“You made him captain, he’s your goal scorer. 3-2; you have to score a goal and you take him off.”
Arsenal will play Everton on Monday in their next Premier League tie.
