Politics & Government

Abia State former governor Dr Orji Kalu, has stressed the need for respect for the rule of law in order for democracy to thrive in the country.

Kalu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said that any pronouncement from a properly constituted court of justice must be obeyed and complied with.

Kalu spoke in an interview on Sunday in Abuja.
According to Kalu, because the various tiers of government, individuals and corporate entities have no respect for the decisions of the courts,
“we are making many unlawful things possible.
“If a court issues an order that Sambo Dasuki be released, it should be obeyed.
“If we Nigerians genuinely want democracy to endure, we should learn how to respect the laws of the land.
“The law of the land is our constitution and any pronouncement made by the court based on the constitution should be obeyed,’’ Kalu said.
The former governor also condemned vote-buying during elections, saying that it was capable of truncating the country’s democratic process.

According to him, people should stop taking N2,000 to vote.
“Vote-buying should be totally condemned by every Nigerian because democracy can only stand when the choice of the people prevailed and the choice of the people must prevail,’’ he added.
Kalu urged voters who were yet to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to do so before the deadline for the suspension of the exercise.

He said that the move would enable them to choose their desired candidates during elections.
“I must ask Nigerians to go out now to register because that is their power.
“If you have your PVC you have power, but if you don’t have it you are powerless.
“ The card enables you to put in place government you want for the next four years,’’ he said.
He also restated that APC would win all elections in Abia in 2019.
“APC is going to win in Abia in 2019 and we are going to win from the first election to the last election, because we are ready for it locally and we are ready for it mentally.
“We are going to win because the PDP has failed for not doing enough for Abia people.
“President Muhammadu Buhari will secure 75 percent votes in our state in the presidential election,’’ Kalu said

The Senator representing Abia Central, Theodore Orji, has boasted that he is a politician to beat in Abia Central given his track record of achievements and adequate representation of his people.

A statement by his Media Adviser and Legislative Aide, Eddie Onuzuruike, a copy of which was obtained by COLOSSUS GISTS Friday, said recent claims by Hon. Iheanacho Obioma about the performance and personality of Senator Orji were false.

According to the statement titled ‘Putting The Facts Straight In Abia Central’, Hon. Obioma’s assertions are “typical of the vituperations of a drowning political adventurist,” which are contrary to the realities on ground in Abia Central.
“Elections are not won on the pages of newspapers. Acho Obioma is yet to win the APC ticket amid challenges from other aspirants. If he is lucky to scale through, I am sure that he has acquired a permanent position in Abia Central elections.
“In saner climes where objectivity is the thrust for assessment, Hon Obioma would have led a delegation to honour Sen. Orji for letting the voice of Abia Central Senatorial District to be heard in National Parliament. He should allow Senator Orji to face his assignment in the Senate,” he added.

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu on Friday dissolved his entire cabinet. We learnt that all but two Commissioners were affected. Those he retained are Commissioners of Finance, Obinna Oriaku and Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Umeh Kalu.

Ikpeazu also sacked his personal aidesincluding all Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants. The Chief of Staff retains his position but the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Eme Okoro was removed.
Recall that Ikpeazu’s election was affirmed by the Supreme Court last month.

A five-man bench of the apex court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, unanimously upheld Ikpeazu’s election as Abia State Governorafter dismissing Uche Ogah’s appeal for lack of merit.

Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari will return to the country before June 11.

Kalu said Buhari’s health had improved when he visited him in the UK last week and urged Nigerians to stop spreading messages of hate and division about the President’s health.

Speaking in an interview with reporters at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, he said:
“I went to Washington to visit some business partners and from there stopped at London to see Mr President, who is recovering very fast.
“I am excited over the state of health of President Buhari despite the hate messages people were spreading about him. I am disappointed with the statement coming from some Nigerians about the health of Mr President.
“The messages some Nigerians have been spreading in the social media is unhealthy. I am calling on Nigerians to have a change of heart. Being a President, does not mean, you cannot be sick, the hate messages are becoming too much. There must be good sense of tolerance among the ethic groups, we are all one.”
Buhari left Nigeria for London May 7 for further medical check-ups
