Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the killing of four persons by suspected armed robbers and kidnappers along the Abuja- Kaduna Expressway on Sunday.
Apart from the four that were pronounced dead, the police said five others sustained fatal gunshot injuries.
Among the dead was Prof. Halima Idris of the University of Abuja and a former Katsina State Education Commissioner.
The Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Manir Yakubu, 23 Commissioners from the state and a former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, were among dignitaries that attended the burial.
Our correspondent gathered that the travelers were attacked at about 6:30pm on Sunday around Gidan Busa Village located at Jere and Katari village along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.
A source said the bandits, many in numbers, killed army and police officers during the attacks, which lasted several hours.
“They mounted a roadblock, stopped motorists and shot sporadically while several others were abducted,” the source said.
He added,
“The army officer traveling with his daughter was killed on the spot while his orderly sustained injury.”
Confirming the incident, the police said four persons were killed in the attack, while five others were injured.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mukhtar Aliyu, a Superintendent of Police, in a statement, said,
“The Kaduna State Police Command wishes to inform the public that on 22/07/2018 at about 06:30 pm, a distress call was received that a group of unidentified armed men blocked the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway by Gidan Busa Village and opened fire indiscriminately on any vehicle on sight.
“In a swift response, teams of policemen stormed the scene where the bandits were dislodged but sadly they had already killed four commuters and injured five others in their dastardly act. Normalcy has been restored on the road with commuters moving safely without molestation.
“The Police Command uses this medium to reassure the public that we are committed, even now than before, to protect lives and properties of Nigerians, irrespective of time, venue and circumstance.
“In this regard, we call on the general public to volunteer information to security agencies to assist us in ridding our communities of such violent miscreants who have constituted a threat to our peaceful coexistence.”
Mr Imohimi Edgal, Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP) on Monday, redeployed the officer and men in charge of the Anti-Cultism Squad over alleged unprofessional conducts and corruption.
The police spokesman in Lagos Command, CSP Chike Oti, said in a statement in Lagos that the move was to reposition and reinvigorate the command’s Anti-Cultism Squad.
According to him, reorganisation of the squad was necessitated by the unprofessional conducts of its personnel and corruption in the unit.
He said that the unit was very crucial in the fight against cultists and cultism in the state.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi, has redeployed the Officer-in-Charge of the Squad, SP Godwin Agbegbe, while CSP Akaninyene Etuk has been posted to take over from him.
“Similarly, all members of the squad were relieved of their duty posts and have been directed to report to the Lagos State Police Headquarters for debriefing.
“The CP warns that the same treatment awaits any other unit in the command that is working at cross-purposes with the fundamental objectives of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
Oti added that all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Head of Departments were enjoined to increase supervision of their men in order to ensure non-violation of the police Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
He also urged members of the public with useful information about the activities of cultists in any part of the state to reach CSP Etuk on 08034448617.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Edgal had on Sept. 3, 2017, sacked, Adejobi Akinade, the Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping and Cultism Unit of the command over alleged corruption.
NAN also reports that the police chief, after removing Adejobi, separated Kidnapping unit from Cultism and posted senior officers as heads of the two units for better service delivery.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Mr Garba Umar, has warned officers serving with the Police Command in the state to steer clear of extortion and illegal collection of tolls.
Umar gave the warning on Tuesday at a Town Hall Meeting with the Ogilisi Foundation held at Rojenny Games Village and Tourists Centre, Oba, Idemili South of Anambra.
He said the Nigerian Police Force still maintained its zero tolerance for corruption and encouraged members of the public to provide useful information on unethical behaviour of officers.
“I cannot imagine that a DPO will, after all his years in service, mess himself up because of certain things. I have a reputation to protect and the policy is zero tolerance for corruption.
“Illegality is a crime and the collection of tolls that don’t get to the government is a crime.
“The Nigerian Police is the only institution that deals with individuals or groups of individuals that err.
“Corruption is against the rule; extortion earns you an outright dismissal and we are doing that every day,” he said.
Umar, therefore, solicited the cooperation and partnership of Ogilisi Foundation, a grassroots socio-cultural group, in crime fighting and prevention through intelligence gathering and information sharing.
He acknowledged the disturbing cases of crime in and around Onitsha, especially within the Okpoko area.
He, however, urged the people to freely give information to the police, while assuring the confidentiality of such information.
“Some of the recent raids in the state where prime suspects were arrested were made possible because of useful information from the public.
“We have been hearing this story that if you give police information, they will expose you, but that was in the past.
“For God’s sake, we are in an information age.
“I have received a number of information that had led to successful operations, without anybody knowing the person who gave the information.
“That is why we give out the numbers of senior officers if you think the junior ones will betray you.
“But I can assure you that any information you give will be treated with utmost confidentiality,” he said.
A stakeholder, Mr Okey Udechi, called for greater presence of security agencies in the riverine areas because of their attendant high level of crime.
Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, assured the police that the foundation would continue to play its noble role in the security of the state.
Ezeonwuka urged anyone having difficulty in divulging information to the police to go through the foundation, explaining that keeping such information away from the police would spell doom for the state. (NAN)

BARELY one week after a gunman attacked worshippers at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, [HERE] gunmen again yesterday struck in the commercial town of Onitsha, killing a policeman and a civilian near the Assemblies of God Church along Oguta road in the heart of the town.
An eyewitness said that the gunmen had sighted the policemen close to the church and opened fire on them, which made other policemen to abandon their patrol vehicle to run to safety. It was gathered that when the policemen ran away, the gunmen moved to the police patrol van and collected the gun allegedly belonging to the policeman they killed.
Another eyewitness, said the gunmen were riding a motorcycle when the one sitting at the back shot a policeman and collected his rifle and also shot another Okada man while escaping.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Garba Umar confirmed the incident, explaining that it was not targeted at the church. The CP said:
“My men were on patrol near the church when they were attacked by some gunmen. It was not an attack on the church, in the real sense of it”.
He also confirmed that the hoodlums took away a rifle belonging to the slain cop.
the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Princess Nkiru Nwode also confirmed that the Onitsha incidence has nothing to do with church attack. She reportedly said the attack was on policemen who were on foot patrol along Oguta Road Onitsha.
According to her, the attackers were hoodlums who disquised themselves as masquerades to dispossess innocent citizens of their belongings and in the process killed a police man and injured some others.
Recall that in an effort to ensure safer society, the government of Anambra State recently launched Motorbike Brigade in addition to several other Security Units that maintain regular patrol of our communities.

Canada-based Nigerian businessman, Mr. Oludare Hodonu, has accused Mr. Dan Okoro, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, and Mr. Uche Nwabude, a clearing agent, of duping him of the sum of N40 million through a transaction.
Mr. Hodonu's ordeal began in 2013 when his ex-mother-in-law visited him Canada. Being infirm, said Mr. Hodonu, the woman died within 24 hours of her arrival. Her death happened at a time when the businessman wanted to ship to Nigeria three containers holding four vehicles each. Mr. Hodonu told Saharareporters that he always traveled with his shipments, but could not do so because of the death of the mother of his ex-wife.
His ex-wife, he said, needed to accompany her mother's corpse to Nigeria, thereby also yoking him with the responsibility of looking after their two daughters.
On account of Mr. Hodonu’s inability to leave Canada, a family friend, who is a police officer, offered to help. The family friend claimed that her boss was familiar with many reputable clearing agents and could be of help.
Convinced that his friend's boss, being a police officer, represented safety, Mr. Hodonu said he sent the documents of the containers to Mr. Dan Okoro, who had been introduced as the man familiar with the best agencies.
Mr. Okoro, said Mr. Hodonu, used to be the Area Commander of Festac Police Area Command in Lagos. Mr. Okoro introduced Mr. Nwabude as an agent, to whom Mr. Hodonu paid N3.9 million as clearing expenses.
From then on, explained Mr. Hodonu, it was one story after the other, without a single one indicating that the containers holding his vehicles had been cleared. Things remained that way until Mr. Hodonu arrived in Nigeria in June 2013, when he routinely resumed every morning at Tin Can Island and spent evenings at Festac Police Area Command, where Mr. Okoro was the Area Commander.
The businessman said he kept asking questions about what might have caused the long delay, but never got answers from either Mr. Okoro or Mr. Nwabude.
Mr. Hodonu said the pressure on him was mounting, as he was just getting back on his feet after a catastrophic investment decision.
This was made worse by the fact that some people who trusted him with their money to help them get cars and other items from Canada had become nervous.
“Some went on radio and television shows to brand me a fraud," said Mr. Hodonu.
He started complaining in bitter tones to Messrs. Okoro and Nwabude.
The businessman had planned to be in Nigeria for a month but was already into his ninth month with no solution in sight.
Out of desperation, Mr. Hodonu went on a dispute resolution program, Mogbejomi De, on Lagos Television. The presenters, he said, wrote to invite Messrs. Okoro and Nwabude, but they refused to come.
Mr. Hodonu said he slumped twice, having developed hypertension because he was losing money, as he desperately tried to save his reputation. Mr. Nwabude, said the businessman, demanded more money, which he got before he could get one of the four containers cleared.
He pressured Mr. Okoro to arrest the agent. The police boss did, but released him shortly thereafter, saying he had signed an undertaking.
When Mr. Nwabude defaulted, the police boss said he did not know his whereabouts any longer. The beleaguered businessman said he was told by one Dr. Anebunam, founder of an association chaired by Mr. Nwabude, that he and Mr. Okoro were long-standing partners in fraud.
Things got worse, Mr. Hodonu explained. While he was chasing his containers, his former wife sold his house and moved to another Canadian province.
Having no other option left, Mr. Hodonu got his lawyers to petition the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
Two of those petitions, dated 15 November 2016 and addressed separately to the Inspector-General and Attorney-General of the Federation, were obtained by SaharaReporters. The petitions, which alleged criminal breach of trust by Messrs. Okoro and Nwabude, appealed for urgent intervention.
"Our client informed us that ACP Okoro brought one Mr. Uche Nwabude as the clearing agent. In the presence of ACP Okoro, the discussion was done with the said Uche Nwabude and a fee of N3.9 million only was agreed as the total expenses for clearing. Our client paid the money to the said Nwabude. Upon receipt of the money, Mr. Uche Nwabude failed and refused to clear the goods," said the petitions.
Prior to these petitions, Mr. Hodonu had written others to the Police and Attorney-General. He disclosed that a former Inspector-General had shown an interest in the matter and directed the Police Commissioner in charge of the Ports, Mrs. Harrison, The businessman said Mr. Okoro was always telling Mrs. Harrison to give him more time.
The loss of over N40 million through the transaction, said Mr. Hodonu, has left him broke and broken.
"I can't do fraud or drugs. The only way I know how to earn money is by working my butt off. I need to take care of my children. I still manage hypertension up till today," he ruefully told SaharaReporters.

The celebration which comes on the 26th and 27th of June was to mark the end of Ramadan among Muslim faithful.
In a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nkeiruka Nwode, the Police Commissioner disclosed that the command had been gainfully empowered to ensure safety of life and prosperity during and after the celebration.
Mr Umar said the men of the command had been positioned at strategies places to maintain peace, as well as apprehend and bring to book, any hoodlum trying to distort the peace Anambra people are enjoying.

Tiwo Lakanu is a millionaire. Well, if he wasn’t before; before Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha “dashed” him N5 million naira. The money is “fuel money”. Sounds like the one corrupt police officers usually demand from complainants before going after suspected criminals.
Lakanu is outgoing police commissioner for Imo State. Okorocha, on Tuesday, showered him with gifts, landed properties as well 5million naira for fueling his car.
The governor’s press secretary Sam Onwuemeodo made the revelation in a release. It reads:
“Governor Okorocha named a road at the back of the Police Headquarters, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu Road, gave him a choice land at Shell – Camp Owerri, worth over N25million, gave him five million (N5m) for the fueling of his car.
“The Governor also asked him to name any part of the state he would like to live even after his retirement from the Police.
It wasn’t a bribe, anyways. Here’s why the governor smiled on Lakanu:
“I want to thank you for the services you rendered to Imo State and her people. What made you outstanding is that your job comes first before money.
“Your success came because money never counted in your willingness to succeed. You have set a very high standard for the in-coming Commissioner of Police. Now Imo people will Judge Commissioners of Police from your standard. I hope and pray that the new CP will measure up.
“You came with love in your heart. You mingled well that nobody will actually know if you are Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba.
“That is why you succeeded in chasing armed robbers, and kidnappers away from Imo. Imo people will decorate you with loudest of honour when the time comes. We shall be giving you our Imo Merit Award.”
