Former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho has accepted a year’s prison sentence for defrauding the Spanish state of 3.3 million euros (2.8 million pounds).
A Spanish court filing revealed this on Tuesday, although the Portuguese will not serve any jail time.
The filing said the tax ministry and Mourinho’s defence team had agreed to exchange the 12-month prison sentence with a daily fine of 250 euros for 24 months, equivalent to 182,500 euros, as under Spanish law jail terms under two years can be served under probation.
The court filing said Mourinho leased his image rights to companies based in the British Virgin Islands and Ireland in 2004 but left those earnings out of his tax returns from 2011 and 2012.
When he was coach of Real Madrid and a fiscal resident in Spain, “with the aim of obtaining illicit profits”.
As well as the one-year prison sentence, Mourinho has been fined 1.9 million euros, 60 per cent of the amount defrauded, as well as 121,764 euros in interest.
The 56-year-old and his representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.
Mourinho is one of the most successful coaches in modern European soccer, winning league titles with Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Porto.
He also won the Champions League in 2004 with Porto and in 2010 with Inter Milan.
He was sacked in December, 2018 by Manchester United after the Premier League club, who won the last of their record 20 top flight league titles in 2013, endured their worst start to a season for 28 years.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who was desperate to get it right after three managerial failures on his watch, turned to Fergie as he prepared to sack Mourinho in the wake of the 3-1 loss at Liverpool.
Ferguson, along with Sir Bobby Charlton and David Gill who make up United’s football board, had rarely, if ever, been asked for advice or assistance by Woodward.
And it is understood Woodward did not consult him over the appointment of Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May 2016.
But the source added:
“Once Woodward had talked to the Glazers and told them he wanted Jose out, he needed to be certain he could get the right kind of figure in for the short term at least.
“That’s where Fergie came in and he helped make sure the whole thing happened with Solskjaer and Phelan.”

Solskjaer has been brought in to replace Jose Mourinho, who was sacked by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, at the club’s training ground last Tuesday.
The former United striker got off to the perfect start, by guiding the team to a 5-1 victory over Cardiff City on Saturday.
Solskjaer has already admitted that he bases a lot of his managerial style on what he learned while playing under Ferguson.
And according to The UK Sun, the Norwegian will be in “regular contact” with Ferguson, after Woodward decided to bring back the Scot as a Consultant.

Former star player Michael Carrick, who joined the club's coaching staff last summer following his retirement, will assume the role of interim manager with the club expected to appoint an external caretaker manager in the coming days.

Mourinho said United made “incredible mistakes” as they were beaten by Brighton.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live’s Monday Night Club, Wright said, “Ed Woodward’s unhappy, the manager’s unhappy, the players are unhappy and the fans are.”
Mourinho warned in the summer that his side faced “a difficult season” if they did not strengthen before the transfer window closed.

Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho, has told Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford that he cannot put more than 11 players on the pitch.
Reports in France this week claimed Martial had decided to leave Manchester after being frustrated with a lack of playing time.
Rashford had also questioned his future at the club.
Martial has suffered most from the signing of Alexis Sanchez and had been in good form until the Chilean arrived at Old Trafford.
Mourinho, speaking to the British media ahead of United clash with West Brom, said the pair are part of a squad rotation system at the club.
The former Chelsea boss said he cannot guarantee playing time to either player.
“It’s just football, we cannot have 11 players, it would be amazing economically for the football clubs to have only 11 and play with the same 11, no injuries, suspension, fatigue, it would be better for everyone to have only 11 but is not impossible,” said Mourinho.
“At every club and every level, you need more than 11 players and only 11 can start, is as simple as that, there’s nothing I can do. Only 11 can start.
“The same questions you are doing to me, you should do to every other manager because everyone has players in the same situation,” he added.

But the Portuguese insists he is making an effort to improve his behaviour, although he admits he is not “perfect” yet.

“I’m pretty sure that I would win. I’m serious! I didn’t create one problem to one fourth official on a touchline, apart from my red card at Southampton when I put a foot on the pitch.
“I’m serious, I prepare myself, I’m really happy. I’m not free of losing my temper, my control in one match. I’m not perfect.
“I’m not going from the Bad One to the Perfect One, no way, but I try, I make an effort and I’m happy with the way things are going,” Mourinho told reporters ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game against Newcastle.
