PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday commissioned the newly reconstructed Institute of Maternal And Child Health popularly known as Ayinke House in Ikeja, describing it as a critical and timely intervention by the Lagos State government in the health sector.
Ayinke House, located within the premises of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Nigeria’s biggest Maternity Hospital, was upgraded from an 80-bed facility to a 170-bed healthcare centre with state-of-the-art medical equipment, as well as information technology services.
Aside the entourage of the President which included Ministers and Special Advisers, Governors of Ogun (Ibikunle Amosu ), Oyo (Abiola Ajimobi), Ondo (Oluwarotimi Akeredolu), Ekiti (Kayode Fayemi), Jubrila Bindow, Adamawa, Acting Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu; Lagos State Governor-Elect, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, among others were in attendance.

Buhari, who landed at the Presidential Wing of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja at about 10: 45 am, arrived at Ayinke House about 15 minutes later, after which he unveiled the project, and also embarked on a comprehensive tour of the facility.
Lagos State governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, while speaking at the event, described the development as historic, expressing optimism that the facility would provide world-class childbirth and maternal care services to Lagosians and Nigerians at large.
The governor recalled that the facility was commissioned exactly 29 years ago, with the late businessman and philanthropist, Sir Mobolaji Bank-Anthony, donating the first dedicated maternal and child care facility to the state government, in memory of his mother; hence the christened name “Ayinke House.”
According to him, the hospital, which started with just one surgical theatre soon assumed a life of its own as first-class childbirth and maternal care centre in the health sector of Nigeria as well as the first choice for expectant mothers.
However, Governor Ambode said the hospital later became over-stretched beyond capacity and somehow obsolete.
He said it in recognition of the need to sustain Bank-Anthony’s philanthropy that the state government, during the administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola, who is now the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, awarded the contract for the expansion and reconstruction of the facility.
“Today, seven years after the closure of the facility, the new edifice is now a 170-bed facility with 5 surgical theatres. It has a 16-bed emergency care units with 3 organ support facilities, 30-bed special baby care unit, 5 neonatal intensive care units, a fully equipped laboratory with support services, laboratories and a blood bank.
“Beyond the significance for the health sector, this institute is a major contribution to our education sector also; as it becomes a veritable platform for our medical students in the State University to enhance their exposure and experience with the top-class medical equipment provided,” Governor Ambode said, just as he revealed that Ayinke House had also been completely digitalised with state-of-the-art medical equipment as well as information technology services supported by the State Ministry of Science and Technology,” Ambode said.
He said in view of President Buhari’s determination of making universal and basic primary healthcare as one of the cardinal priorities of his administration, the state government, under him, had consciously worked to bring quality, affordable and modern healthcare to all our citizenry, among other initiatives in the health sector.
“Just last year, we launched the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme to allow residents access top quality medical care with a little contribution and support from the state government.
“These and other efforts are directed at improving the lives of our people, especially the women and children; and by extension the productivity of our nation,” he said.
The governor, while congratulating President Buhari on his resounding victory at the recent presidential election, thanked him for finding time to personally commission Ayinke House and other projects in the state.
He said the completion of the projects would not have been possible without President Buhari’s support, administrative direction and encouragement.
Besides, Governor Ambode commended the Management and Staff of the State’s Ministry of Health, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, LASUTH as well as contractors for working round the clock and their enthusiasm in getting the project completed.
Similarly, President Buhari also commissioned the 500-seater Lagos Theatre in Oregun, Ikeja.
The ultra-modern theatre is one of the four simultaneously constructed by the Ambode administration to increase arts spaces and create standard platforms for talented citizens of the State to showcase their skills.
The Governor said the three other theatres with the same specifications are also ready for commissioning in Igando, Badagry and Epe.
The president, who arrived at the venue at exactly 11:30 am, was treated to a live dance performance by a young group of talented artist before taking his leave.

'Big Daddy' is currently the most watched Nigerian short film on YouTube presently, with over 600,000 views. Speaking on the grant, the founder of LFA, Chris Ihidero, it is delightful to kick off the 2018 edition of the project.
“It's really delightful to kick off the Film for Life series this year, thanks to GPA's grant. I have always wanted to help young filmmakers make their first films, knowing what making Big Daddy in 2011 did for my own career.
"A short film is a call card, something that says: ‘Hey, I can do this!’ My hope is that the participants, whether they win or not, go away with a sense of understanding of what it means to be a filmmaker and to be socially aware as individuals interested in making the various societies they live in, a better place for all,” Ihidero noted.
In the same vein, the Lagos Film Academy called for applications from youths based in Lagos, Nigeria; between the ages of 18-30 who are interested in making their first film.
LFA also hinted that for 2018, the 'Film for Life' project is themed around the upcoming 2019 general elections in Nigeria.

With the curtains drawn on the 2018 edition of West Africa’s premier international art fair, Art X Lagos, art-loving Lagosians still bask in the euphoria of the intrigues and artistic spectacle that made this third edition memorable.
From November 2 to 4, the venue, Civic Centre, Victoria Island was abuzz with art audience, long-standing and emerging ones, who came in appreciation of contemporary art in Africa and diaspora, in a near-festival ambience with the perks of waterfront beauty.
The special guest of honour, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, was joined by renowned collectors and the circle of royalties including the Obi of Onitsha, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, and other VIPs such as the CEO, Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, amongst others.
One of the exciting moments of the fair was the opening night where Access Bank Plc, the Gold Sponsor of ART X Lagos, loaned to the fair, Ben Enwonwu’s historical ‘Tutu’.
This 1974 masterpiece had, earlier this year, been documented as the most valued work of Nigerian modern art sold at auction for £1.2 million ($1.67 million).
The public display of ‘Tutu’ at ART X marked a hugely significant moment in Nigeria’s art history, as the painting makes its first public display in Nigeria since 1975, when it was last shown in Lagos.
The keynote artist, Yinka Shonibare MBE’s highly anticipated exhibition, exploring his career highlights, was a curated project of the fair.
He once again demonstrated the unique artistry he has become famed for, through his varied subject matters of global interests cultivated from history, politics, literature, philosophy and cultural identity.
On his homecoming, Shonibare remarked: “I feel fortunate. I know that I can make a contribution to the art scene.”
Shonibare’s appearance at the highly sought-after ART X Talks was an icing on the cake for the fair.
Curated by Missla Libsekal on the last day of the fair, the extension room for the fair was filled to capacity inspite of the few technical glitches that interfered with the visuals mid-way into the session.
The talks saw key stakeholders in Africa’s art economy in a series of exciting and engaging talks, including leading voices such as the Obi of Onitsha, Artist Aboubakar Fofana, with leading art historian, Chike Okeke-Agulu, as moderator.
The 18 participating galleries include Addis Fine Art (Ethiopia), Afriart Gallery (Uganda), Arthouse – The Space (Nigeria), Artyrama (Nigeria), Bloom Art (Nigeria), Circle Art Agency (Kenya), Gallery 1957 (Ghana), Nike Art Gallery (Nigeria), Nubuke Foundation (Ghana), Out of Africa Gallery (Spain), Retro Africa (Nigeria), Signature Beyond (Nigeria), SMAC Gallery (South Africa), SMO Contemporary (Nigeria), Stevenson (South Africa), TAFETA (UK), Thought Pyramid (Nigeria) and Tiwani Contemporary (UK).
Curated by A Whitespace Creative Agency, the fair showcased a series of interactive projects, titled “Touch, Space + The Future,” featuring diverse and exciting art installations across conductive art and virtual reality, stretching the boundaries of contemporary African art.
The new age media invited guests to expand their horizons and enjoy new ways of contemporary art experience.
The 2018 ART X Prize with Access winner, Bolatito Aderemi-Ibitola, wore warm smiles as she presented her solo project, ‘Scraps from Mama’s Floor’ at this year’s fair, capturing the attention of guests with her multi-sensory and multimedia project.
With new age technology using cameras integrated into the performance piece, visitors were able to engage with her piece and see themselves as part of the artwork.
Speaking during the fair, Tokini Peterside, Founder and Director, ART X Lagos, expressed her joy at the immense growth of the fair over the past three years.
“ART X Lagos was created for moments like this, to celebrate diversity, to bring people together from across the continent and really to show African excellence and set an example for the world. Over 15 countries are represented here in this one space and I am so grateful you are all here to witness that,” she said.
For the night crawlers, ART X Live! made a return on the Saturday night of the fair, at the Civic Centre car park.
The show relived the sounds of African Legends, creating a nostalgic feeling.
One of Nigeria’s creatives, Odunsi the engine, was the creative director for the live show, which saw exhilarating performances from BOJ, Teni the entertainer and Ghanaian singer Amaarae, all accompanied by innovative visuals from artists Chukwuka Nwobi, Tomisin Akins and Fadekemi.

Justice Olusola Williams of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has struck out the case of fraud instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the Chairman of Innoson Motors Nigeria Limited, Innocent Chukwuma.
The Judge struck out the case after the EFCC failed to produce Chukwuma in court today to face trial.
Chukwuma and his company, Innoson Motors Nigeria Limited, were to be arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy to obtain by false pretences, obtaining by false pretence, stealing and forgery.
The defendants allegedly committed the offences between 2009 and July 2011 in Lagos.
The defendants were alleged to have conspired to obtain, by false pretences, containers of motorcycles, spare parts and raw materials, property of Guaranty Trust Bank, from Mitsui OSK Lines Limited, Apapa, Lagos.
They were also alleged to have fraudulently induced staff of Mitsui OSK and Maersk Line to deliver to them, via their clearing agents, the goods that were imported from China in the name of GTB by falsely pretending that they were authorized by the bank to clear the goods.
The defendants were said to have forged a bill of lading numbered 598286020 of Maersk Line Limited and 11007950841 of Mutsui O.S.K. Line by knowingly putting a false GTB stamp and signature of the bank staff.
The alleged fraud was to enable the forged documents to be used or acted upon as genuine to the prejudice of any person within Lagos or elsewhere.
However, since the suit was instituted, first before Justice Mojisola Dada of the same court, the defendant has refused to appear in court to face his trial.
In a short ruling today, Justice Williams held that it was the responsibility of the EFCC to produce him in court.
“This court is not an investigator or a prosecutor. This court cannot waste precious judicial time prosecuting a matter that is going nowhere.
“This is a criminal matter that can be instituted anytime the prosecution is ready. The court hereby strikes out the matter,” the Judge held.
Justice Dada on June 22, 2018, stepped down from presiding over the matter on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).
All efforts by the EFCC to arraign the defendant before Justice Dada on five consecutive occasions failed despite being declared wanted on May 23, 2018 and also procuring a bench warrant for his arrest.

The aspirants, who have obtained nomination forms and submitted same, include incumbent Governor Akinwunmi Ambode; Tinubu ’s preferred candidate and Managing Director, Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Femi Hamzat.
The situation, according to analysts, has put paid to Ambode’s moves to automatically secure the ticket of the APC for the second term through the endorsement of Tinubu.
The council is made up of the governor and leaders of the party across the three senatorial districts of the state, including Lagos APC Chairman, Tunde Balogun; Dr. Olorunfemi Bashorun; Senator Anthony Adefuye; Prof. Tunde Samuel; Chief Adeyemi Ikuforiji; Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi; Cardinal James Odumbaku; Chief Lanre Rasak; and Dr. Yomi Finnih.
With this decision, Ambode is faced with a difficult task ahead because of his unpopularity in the party which favored Sanwo-Olu, courtesy of Tinubu’s support.
Sanwo-Olu had emerged through the Mandate Movement, a group loyal to Tinubu.
One of the GAC members, Adefuye, who confirmed the group’s decision, told Sunday Vanguard: “We (GAC members) met at Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s residence this evening and decided that all governorship aspirants on the platform of APC in the state should go for the primary exercise to pick the ticket for APC flag bearer in the 2019 general elections.
“I think it was only one member of the council that was absent at the meeting.”
The Chairman of the party in the state, Balogun, had, earlier, while reacting to the number of aspirants for the ticket, maintained that it would further strengthen internal democracy in the party.
Earlier, a party leader, who preferred anonymity, had confided in Sunday Vanguard that the outcome of the meeting might not favor Ambode as most members of the GAC were opposed to Ambode’s re-election bid.
“I don’t think there is going to be any shift on the stance to do away with Ambode as he has so many enemies within the council, even if Tinibu’s decides to forgive him (Ambode),” the party leader said.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s quest to be re-elected as Lagos State Governor for a second term may have run into troubled waters as 50 council chairmen loyal to Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Ambode’s estranged godfather, have met and pledged their support for Jide Sanyaolu Sanwonolu, who is alleged to be Tinubu’s preferred choice.
This comes a day after Ambode, alongside some members of his cabinet, stormed the headquarters of the APC in Abuja to get Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for his 2019 bid.
The council chairmen are the most influential grassroots mobilizers under the direct primary system adopted by APC, to pick governorship candidates.
On the other hand, Sanwonolu and Obafemi Hamzat, two prominent members of the APC in Lagos, also picked nomination forms for the governorship election of 2019.
Sanwonolu, who served as a commissioner under Babatunde Fashola, Ambode’s predecessor, is currently the managing director of Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC).
At a meeting held after he picked up his nomination form, James Odunmbaku, an ally of Tinubu known as “Baba Eto” in the political circle, said “Sanwololu is the incoming governor of Lagos.”
The video below obtained by Daily Post, shows all 57 local government chairman as they signed up to support Sanwonolu.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Prince Gbolahan Lawal has alerted the public against the use of asbestos as ceiling in homes, saying it could cause cancer.
“Few years ago, Lagos State Government stopped the use of asbestos for ceiling because of its carcinogenic effect; we now use PVCs (plastic) in our estates and buildings.
“Asbestos ceilings are carcinogenic, it causes cancer and if you have it in your house you should try and change it,’’ he told neewsmen on Sunday in Lagos.
Lawal called for mass enlightenment on the use of asbestos in public and private buildings.
Newsmen report that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an intergovernmental agency and a part of the World Health Organization with its headquarters in Lyon, France, classifies asbestos as “carcinogenic to humans,’’ based on its ability to cause mesothelioma and cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box) and ovaries.
Lawal said the state government was exploring other alternatives and innovations that would allow for the use of cheaper available local raw materials to bring down the cost of houses.
On the Green Building Initiative, the commissioner disclosed that the state was partnering with Echostone, an international eco-friendly construction firm, to develop its affordable homes initiative.
He explained that the method ensured that a 40 per cent of carbon footprints were reduced in line with global climatic change initiatives.
According to Lawal, the partnership also ensured adoption of the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) programme that helps developers reduce their buildings’ energy and water consumption by 20 per cent while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
The commissioner added that the state had also adopted eco-friendly water and sewage management system to improve the health and quality of lives of residents.
Lawal said carbon emissions would be reduced if building designs are targeted at proper ventilation and illumination as well as green areas for houses.
This, he noted, would reduce the use of generators and reliance on electricity to illuminate such houses during the day or hot weather.
“Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration is also in partnership with a German government institute (GZI) as well as the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing on how to reduce water and energy consumption in our estates to achieve energy efficiency in the buildings.
“We are collaborating with all the regulatory agencies on green building because it is cheaper and it help to create more jobs,’’ he said.
