Many of us have faced this dilemma at
some point in our life. We relegate shame, trust and ethics to a different corner when we desperately want
to be in the know. Most times we see
cogent reasons to snoop; It could be you suspect some shenanigans going on at
work or church, you are getting less attention from your spouse, your daughter
seems distracted and is walking around with her head in the cloud or you notice
your son too dey minimize the page he is viewing whenever you get close to his
laptop or phone.
It could also be plain curiosity to know someone’s untold life,
to confirm or deny suspicion and this is the worst kind of reason. How many times have you picked up a phone to view messages, chats and mails? How many times have you peeked at something boldly marked PERSONAL or CONFIDENTIAL? Ohhhh, the adrenaline you feel when you are in someone’s private business is something you might wish to experience over and over.

Humans are naturally curious and we
all love to have the upper hand in any situation hence the reason governments,
countries, corporations all do it, although they prefer the term “Espionage”. So do you love to snoop?Do you
enjoy laying your hands on private information?
Personally, am self confessed snoop,
I am so good at it that I leave no trace especially on electronic devices. It
got so bad I learnt some basic social media hacking skills just for the fun of
it.I do nothing with most information I get (trust me some are really
disturbing) but I realized my addiction to snooping was costing me something.
Ever since I got fully fledged into
snooping last year I realized I have become a cynic with a suspicious mind
always on overdrive. I don’t have to stumble onto something that
will make me regret snooping cos I doubt if I will feel bad at finding
something that gives me a clear warning in advance. You might snoop and
confront the offending party but what does the act of snooping leave you with
after apologies and penances are made. "TRUST ISSUES"
Even when you are caught you promise
never to do it again but it’s so hard when phones or letters are
at reach. “One more time and that’s it” is chanted by the red devil in your
head till you stretch your hand and lose one kilogram of trust.
Here is the simple equation;
one snoop=1 kg lack of trust + 1kg
partial or full insomnia
100g Paranoia.
So when next you are faced with the choice to
snoop, think about the residues that will be left after the deed, is it worth
your sanity? Remember the ball is in your court, you can stop the game or
continue with the free throws.
