Have you ever thought about discovering your hidden powers
and strengths? Are you aware that there are latent powers and abilities that
divinity has placed in the inside of you? Let me show you how you can discover
your talents in six ways.
- DRIVE: it
all begins with a drive.
Drive can also be called passion or strong desire for
something. Until you desire to be a success or to thrive in life, you may never
have to do certain things that have the capacity to reveal more about your
potentials to you. You can cultivate drive by setting personal goals. You must
also make up your mind that you don’t want to live an insignificant life. As
long as you desire to accomplish great feat and achieve big dreams in life, you
will always have some drive that would take you to certain places and make you
do certain things that will reveal more about yourself to you.
- EXPOSURE:
try different things, learn different skills and always try to be active in the
affairs of your organization. You cannot be your best when you are always
hiding from responsibilities. You cannot be enjoying the luxury of a corner and
expect to understand the fullness of what you are capable of. If you want to
discover what you can do, get exposure! Find out places and activities that may
interest you. Take up leadership roles in different places and try to be the
best in them. The more you expose yourself to different challenges the more
chances you stand to discover your strengths. Strengths are revealed in that
moment when you just have to make something work and you don’t want to accept
any excuses.
- TRIAL AND
ERROR: It’s not bad to fail at something. It’s not bad to try your hands on
something new or even something you don’t really think you can do. In fact you
have no right to say you cannot do something if you’ve not at least given your
best shot at that thing and failed after some good number of times. In life, we
learn by trial and error- you must do something to see if you can do it. If you
got it right, thank goodness you did, but if not, well at least you did give it
a try to find out for yourself. The person who tried and failed is more
experienced than the one who has not even tried but believes he/she cannot do
it.
- POSITIVE
REMARKS: Your talent could show itself in disguise so be prepared to appreciate
every little effort or display of potential talent. Has anybody ever told you
that you have a way of carrying people along or that you are very good at
making people do what they would ordinarily not want to do? It may be a
negative or positive compliment but there is a talent there somewhere if you
can look beyond the disguise.
- CHECK YOUR
TEMPERMENT: in my temperament seminars I used to teach something I learned from
Tim Lahaye the author of why you act the way you do. I teach that people can
figure out their career by observing the strengths of their temperaments. In
the same vein, people can discover their potential talent by paying attention
to how their temperament affects their strengths. This is not always the case
but to a very large extent, if you analyze your temperament you can come too
close to knowing your talents. Here is my note on that:
TEMPERAMENT AND CAREER
1. SANGUINES:
they are people oriented salesman types who excel in public relations,
people-helping, or anything that requires charisma.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: marketing, advertising, entertainment
industry such as music, comedy, Masters of Ceremony and acting. They can be
good preachers as well.
They can become historians and diplomats especially when
blended with Melancholy. They can be good representative, public or
motivational speakers. They suit properly for any environment that requires
meeting a public and helping someone in need.
2. CHOLERIC: they
are strong natural leaders that are goal-oriented individuals who like to
manage other people and lead some kind of adventurous projects.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: any job that requires leadership,
motivation and productivity. Construction jobs, architecture, project
supervisor, foreman, technician, entrepreneurs, sales, teaching in practical
subjects, politics, military service and sports. They are best suited for jobs
which require industry, hard work and activity.
3. MELANCHOLY:
they are creative, analytical individuals with strong perfectionist tendencies
who often have aesthetics traits. No other temperament has a higher IQ,
creative or imaginative ability than the Melancholy.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: composing (songs, plays etc),
artistry, music, invention, philosophy, theorizing, theology, sciences,
educators. Any vocation that requires perfection, self-sacrifice and creativity
is open to the Melancholy. They can be good at designing, drawing, writing,
carpentry, engineering, mechanics, bricklaying; music playing etc Melancholies
are good actors who can almost play every role because they are naturally good
at mimicking people and acting.
4. PHLEGMATICS:
they are cool (quiet, easy-going), detailed individuals who tend to limit
themselves. They can do statistical, microscopic work that would drive others
berserk.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: they can help others fulfill their own
dreams as such they are good secretaries and personal assistants, elementary
school teachers, school administrators, librarians, counselors, college
department heads. Phlegmatics can become good at engineering, sanitation
experts, chemical engineers, draftsman, mechanical and civil engineering,
statistics, carpentry, electricians, plasterers, glass blowers, watch, camera
and phone repairers and other jobs requiring efficient management.
Before you rush into conclusions ask yourself the following
questions and answer them: What is your temperament? What are the talents you
can possibly have based on what your temperament is? Do you have them? How do
you know? Have others said the same?
- EXPERIENCE:
knowing your talents is a process of self discovery and it cannot happen
overnight. Depending on the kind of person you are and the kind of talent you
have, it may take some time for you to discover your talents. It’s a gradual
process and if you do what I said in the other points above, then it may not
take that much time. As you as you grow up in life, as you widen your
experience, and as you begin to see yourself in different contexts and
environment, you’ll eventually begin to see and know yourself better than
before. Our lives are history books with large volumes; it’s unfair to expect
to know everything about yourself in a little time. It doesn’t matter how long
it takes, keep digging till you find it. And if you’ve found one, keep digging
until you find the rest.
