During his Uncensored show in Houston, Texas this week,
Bright Okpocha showed why his stage name is 'BasketMouth', as he rubbished
D'banj's award at the just concluded MTV Africa Music Awards.
D'banj won the Evolution Awards ahead of compatriots
P-Square, 2Face, Asa, Anselmo Ralph (Angola), Black Coffee (South Africa),
Chameleone (Uganda), Fally Ipupa (DRC), HHP (South Africa), and Samini (Ghana).
According to MTV Base Channel Director, Tim Horwood:
"The MAMA 'Evolution' award honours established artistes who have made an
indelible mark on African and global music culture, taken African music to new
territories around the world, pushed the boundaries of creativity, and shaped
the soundscape of contemporary Africa".
But the ace comedian, who was nominated for the 'Personality
of the Year' award at the 2015 MAMAs but didn't win, disagreed on the choice of
D'banj for the award. He also wondered how Davido picked the 'Male Artist of the
Year' for the second consecutive time at the MAMAs ahead of his compatriot,
Wizkid.
Below is what he said:
"The first Award that they will nominate me for, that I really respected was that Award, I really love the fact that I was nominated. Technically, I do not look at awards to judge how much I'm good; My Award is you people. For the fact that you guys are coming to watch me, I got this much award. Like around the world. You guys are awesome. When they were doing the awards.. P'Square, they won like 2 awards, best duo, Best this one.. D'Banj won.. I don't know why. (crowd bursts out in laughter). Then Davido won above Wizkid, which is quite strange, but it's allowed.. It's allowed".
