UNIZIK POST-UTME REPORT - Monday being the first day of the scheduled Nnamdi Azikiwe
University (UNIZIK) post utme exercise for students trying to gain admission
into the university was something most of the students would describe as a
horrible and unforgettable day.
About 60,000 students applied for admission into this
institution, this in turn made the management of the school to schedule the
exercise in groups and allocate different days for each of the group.
Monday being the
first day of the exam, students poured in from all parts of the country, some
from the west like lagos, some from the north like kaduna other from the middle
belt or the south. What those students experienced was something I myself
wouldn’t wish my enemy.
The exams which was scheduled to start by 8am in the morning
started around 3pm in the afternoon. Due to the large number of students it was
a great work checking them in to the exam hall.
And this was a computer based examination which most
students weren’t aware of because the information just got out around Friday
last week.
The door to the hall was very narrow and the number of
computers available was not even up to 200. The problem was now how to get
about 10,000 students to take exam in such condition.
They started creating turns for the students, giving out
numbers , this worked for some time but then before now, rain had beaten the
students twice and most of them have not even taken their breakfast. Some were
asthmatic, while others had pneumonia.
So when the struggle to enter the exam room started, all
hell broke loose. Students were pushing and tugging, some forged fake numbers
and entered with it while others pushed their way through.
Everywhere was stuffy so much so that some had to result to
the technique of leaving their line periodically to get fresh air outside. Said
a source
In the midst of all the commotion, some students started
fainting, first a girl then another, then another one. Some thought it was fake
until ambulance came and took them away for treatment.
While all these was going on, the school security wasn’t
even helping matters, they were busy trying to use belt and chair and cane to
scare the students into behaving which in turn caused a stampede which got more
than half of a quarter of the students there to sustain lots of injuries. The
ones with minor injuries were ignored while the major ones were taken to the
hospital.
The even more annoying thing was that at the end of
everything about half of the students were not attended to, which then made
some students cry out in pain, especially those from far places like Delta
state, Ondo state etc. The ones which were not attended to were told to come back
on Friday for their own exams.
This university knowing that they have this amount of
students coming for post utme couldn’t
even prepare well for the exams, they were busy making money from the
forms and then forgot to use the money to prepare a safe environment for these
students.
These students had to walk for about 30 minutes just to go
from the school gate where they are first checked in, to their examination
hall. No vehicle was allowed inside the school premises unless you are a staff
and none was provided by the school for the students.
This is also CHILD ABUSE, but then no one would speak up for these kids because its “normal thing” in Nigeria, what a PITY!!
Well that’s what they say, corrupt leaders, mismanagement of
funds, using the funds meant for something for their own benefits. Well I do
hope those students get well soon.
