The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday revealed that the nation has
been seriously under-policed to the extent that only one Policeman provides
security for about 566 people. Senator Isiaka Adepeko who analyzed the situation from the
170 million people that are being protected internally by about 305,579
Policemen and women, that the inadequacy runs short of international best
practices of the United Nations global effective policing standard which is a
ratio of 222 Police officers to 100 people.
The senator said:
“Distinguished Senators, you are all aware that in line with International best practices of the United Nations global best practices, it is a ratio of 222 Police officers to 100 people."
From various contributions, the Senate commended President
Buhari for his prompt approval that 100,000 Police officers be recruited.
The Senate President also urged Police Service Commission to
be wary of corruption in the course of the recruitment, noting that the recruitment
should be in line with the Federal Character.
