FC Barcelona has decided to terminate the contract signed with 24-year-old Sergi Guardiola, hours after finding that he had published offensive tweets about the club and Catalonia on Monday, December 28.
Guardiola signed to play for Barca B and the team announced the move on their website, complete with photos. But unluckily just before the end of the day, the club had taken down that report and soon posted another that said the contract was no longer valid.
This decision came in after the club discovered past tweets showing Guardiola’s support of bitter rivals Real Madrid as well as ones deemed to be offensive towards Catalonia.
Guardiola tweets dated as far back as 2013 read:
“I wouldn’t have Messi in my team; he spoils the way the team plays.”
“Up Real Madrid, and the hell with Catalonia.”
‘Today to hell with Catalonia and up Real Madrid.”
Guardiola although had protected his Twitter account by Monday night, but reports said the offending tweet was posted in 2013. Irrespective of the misunderstandings, Barca B still completed the other signings of midfielder Xemi from Cornella and left-back Moises Delgado of Sevilla Atletico, who will join training on Tuesday, December 29.
