Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller was an unused substitute at the Westfalenstadion on Saturday as the Black and Yellows suffered a 2-1 defeat against Mainz, but results elsewhere have all but confirmed their place in the Bundesliga's top four this season.

The 37-year-old veteran will leave Dortmund this summer following a 16-year spell with the Westphalian club, where he made 452 appearances and kept 147 clean sheets.

Here are six of the best moments to look back on from the stellar career of one of Germany's most undervalued goalkeeping talents.

6. "The Best Goalkeeper in the World" - Jürgen Klopp

The 2012/13 campaign finished in disappointment for Weidenfeller - Arjen Robben's deft finish did swing the Champions League final in Bayern Munich's favour after all.

But following what was one of his best ever seasons for Dortmund, where he saved the most one-on-ones in Europe's elite competition, then-manager Jürgen Klopp lavished praise onto the veteran goalkeeper, claiming that he was the best shot-stopper in the world that year - and it's difficult to argue against that.

5. Second Only to Michael Zorc

Having represented the club a whopping 453 times, which could increase against Hoffenheim next week, Weidenfeller wins a metaphorical silver medal in Borussia Dortmund's all-time appearance charts.

Only Michael Zorc - who now acts as the club's sporting director - has represented Dortmund on more occasions (571 matches).

4. That Rivalry With Jens Lehmann

Departing FC Kaiserslautern in 2002, a fresh-faced Weidenfeller threw Dortmund's goalkeeping hierarchy into question following his move to the Westfalenstadion.

Forming a rivalry with Jens Lehmann that still exists to this day, the arrival of Weidenfeller was the catalyst that forced Lehmann to secure a move elsewhere, eventually joining Arsenal in 2003.

3. Germany's Oldest Ever Debutant

For over a decade it was unthinkable that anyone other that Weidenfeller would start in between the sticks for Borussia Dortmund, but that domestic pedigree didn't translate into appearances for the German national team.

In fact, Weidenfeller became Die Mannschaft's oldest ever goalkeeping debutant when he finally got the nod by Joachim Löw - keeping a clean sheet in an international friendly against England back in 2013, aged 33.

2. Victory at the Maracanã

Despite making a grand total of zero appearances at the World Cup in 2014, Weidenfeller returned from the tournament with a winners medal around his neck.

Yes, his contribution on the pitch can only be described as limited at best. But the veteran's influence in the dressing room - coupled with Germany's transformation from defensively-minded traditions of the late 20th century to attacking football that was on display in Brazil - make Weidenfeller's success in Rio de Janeiro worthy of a spot on this list.

1. Borussia Dortmund's Title-Winning Mannschaftskapitän

Roman Weidenfeller won his first ever piece of silverware following Dortmund's incredible 2010/11 campaign, lifting the Bundesliga title a whopping 10 points ahead of reigning champions Bayern Munich.

But most impressively for Dortmund's goalkeeper, who played in all but one game that season, was that the frequent absence of Sebastian Kehl meant that Weidenfeller would go on to captain the side on 30 occasions during the title-winning campaign.

Weidenfeller has since gone on to win another Bundesliga title, as well as two German Cup and Super Cup finals.
