Thousands of well-plumed guests and enthusiastic royal fans streamed into Windsor today Saturday to capture their piece of the extravaganza that is the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Oprah Winfrey, Idris Elba, Elton John, George and Amal Clooney and David and Victoria Beckham were among the first guests to arrive at Windsor Castle. They are among 600 celebrities, royalty, athletes and family friends invited to the gothic St. George’s Chapel, where the wedding will start at noon (1100GMT).

As the celebrations got underway, Queen Elizabeth II honored her red-headed, 33-year-old grandson with a new title: the Duke of Sussex. That means that Markle will become the Duchess of Sussex when she says “I will.”

The wedding is a global event, thanks to Harry’s status as a senior British royal and Markle’s celebrity after starring on the U.S. television series “Suits” for seven years. The wedding pomp and ceremony – complete with Anglican prayers and tradition, classical music, a gospel choir and a horse-drawn carriage ride through Windsor – will be beamed live to tens of millions of TV viewers across the world.

Relatives at the ceremony included Charles Spencer, the brother of Harry’s late mother Princess Diana, and Harry’s cousin Zara Tindall and her husband. Also in attendance was the family of Prince William’s wife Kate: Parents Carole and Michael Middleton, sister Pippa Middleton and brother James Middleton.

Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy was also among the congregation.

Outside, thousands of fans crammed the streets of Windsor. Irene Bowdry, a lawyer from California, was aboard the early train to Windsor. She booked her trip to England as soon as the wedding date was announced.

“An American in the royal family, isn’t that so exciting?” she said.

The weather was balmy and clear, bathing the ancient stones of Windsor Castle in a beautiful spring light. Royal fans have been camping outside the castle for days, and British police have stepped up security, with sniffer dogs, barricades and patrols all over town.

“Windsor is absolutely bursting with excitement,” said royal historian Hugo Vickers. “There are cardboard cutouts of Meghan and Harry in every shop window, virtually. There’s bunting all over the place. I’ve never seen so many people in the streets of Windsor.”

Everyone is waiting to see which designer Markle has chosen for her wedding gown. Prince Charles, the groom’s father, will walk Markle to the altar after her own father became too ill to attend.

It is a time of transition for the British monarchy, one that seems filled with hope as William and Harry – the two sons of the late Princess Diana and Prince Charles – step ever more confidently into the limelight. Many in the crowd, like Ana Karukin, a Brazilian nurse living in Florida, said they came to witness a moment of history.

“We’ve got to be here for him and for her, my Meghan, my special girl, to support them, because it’s a beautiful time,” she said. “I wish that Diana was here, but she’s in heaven watching over them.”

The brothers found the time amid the wedding hoopla to stroll outside the castle Friday evening to thank fans for coming. A smiling Harry gave a thumb’s up and answered “Great, thank you!” when asked by a fan how he was feeling on the eve of his wedding.

And it seems to be a time of joy for 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth II and her 96-year-old husband, Prince Philip, who plans to attend the ceremony despite his recent hip replacement surgery. She is seeing her grandson marry a woman who clearly has brought him the happiness he’s often said was missing from his life after his mother’s premature death.

The family tableau will play out on the broadest possible stage. Dozens of broadcasters set up on the castle grounds for a visual feast. The chapel itself is a masterpiece of the late Gothic style, and Windsor Castle has been home to British sovereigns for nearly 1,000 years.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds will ride a horse-drawn carriage through the streets of Windsor, flanked by a British military procession with many officers on horseback.

Then it will be off to the first of two gala receptions. The first will be hosted in the afternoon by the queen – with finger foods, wine and champagne. The second, smaller reception is being thrown by Charles.

A three-hour break in between will allow for a rest and a change of outfits for the lucky 200 invited to the evening soiree.

The chapel service will reflect Markle’s American roots. The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, the African-American leader of the Episcopal Church, will deliver a sermon, and the musical selections will include versions of Ben. E. King’s “Stand By Me” and Etta James’ “Amen/This Little Light of Mine.”

Markle will be accompanied by her mother, Doria Ragland, when she is driven to the chapel, and many of her closest friends and some co-stars from “Suits” will be in the audience. She opted not to have a maid of honor but there will be 10 young bridesmaids and page boys, including 4-year-old Prince George and 3-year-old Princess Charlotte, the elder children of William and his wife Kate.

Harry will be joined by some of his buddies from his 10 years of military service – an experience that included tours of duty in Afghanistan – and from many of the charities he supports, which have focused on helping wounded veterans or encouraging a more open discussion of mental health issues.

The couple has made an effort to honor the memory of Harry’s mother Diana, whose older sister Jane Fellowes will give a reading during the wedding service.

After seeing the couple up close, Curry said Friday that he saw “two real people who are obviously in love.”

“When I see them, something in my heart leaps,” he said. “That’s why 2 billion people are watching them.”

The Significance of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Wedding Song ‘Stand By Me’
In 2015, just one month before King’s death, “Stand By Me” was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” enough to be inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. “I think this is one of the greatest moments of my life,” King told CBS News at the time.

A song about enduring love, “Stand By Me” is, of course, popular wedding tune. But for many, its lyrics also pack a deep political message. When “Stand By Me” first rose to popularity during the civil rights movement, it was used as a rallying cry for solidarity amongst people of color.

Markle, whose mother is black and father is white, may not be the first biracial royal. However, according to Anna Whitelock, a royal expert and director of the London Centre for Public History and Heritage, Markle’s marriage to Prince Harry represents a more inclusive royal family.

Considering the history behind “Stand By Me,” the predominantly black choir performing the song at Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry seems to be symbolic of this transition.

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, the 27th Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, delivered the address titled “The Power of Love” at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding Saturday at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The transcript is below:

i

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said:

"We must discover the power of love,

        the redemptive power of love.

And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world

        a new world.

        Love is the only way."

There's power in love. Do not underestimate it.

Anyone who has ever fallen in love,

knows what I mean.

But think about love in any form or experience of it.

It actually feels good to be loved, and to express love.

There is something right about it.  And there's a reason.

An old medieval poem says it:

"Where true love is found, God himself is there."

The Bible, 1 John 4 says it this way.

"Beloved, let us love one another,

        because love is from God;

Everyone who loves is born of God

Whoever does not love does not know God

There's power in love.

Love can help and heal when nothing else can.

Love can lift up and liberate for living when nothing else will.

And the love that brings two people together

is the same love that can bind them together,

Whether on mountaintops of happiness

and through valleys of hardship.

Love is strong as death

It's flashes are flashes of fire.

Many waters cannot quench love

Love can see you through! There's power in love.

ii

But the love of which we speak is not only for couples getting married or just for interpersonal relationships.

Jesus of Nazareth taught us that the way of love is

the way to a real relationship with the God who created all of us,

and the way to true relationship with each other as children of that one God,

as brothers and sisters in God's human family.

One scholar said it this way:

"Jesus had founded the most revolutionary movement in human history: a movement

built on the unconditional love of God for the world and the mandate to live that love."

        (Charles Marsh's The Beloved Community)

And in so doing, to change lives and the world itself! There's a reason.

An old spiritual may suggest why:

"If you cannot preach like Peter,             There is a balm in Gilead

And you cannot pray like Paul,           To make the wounded whole

You can tell the love of Jesus,                 There is a balm in Gilead

How he died to save us all                     To heal the sin sick soul"

"Just tell the love of Jesus, how he died to save us all."

He didn't sacrifice his life for himself

Or anything he could get out of it

He did it for others, for the other, for the good and wellbeing of others

That's love

How does St. Paul say it?

Love is not jealous, rude, or boastful.

Love does not insist on its own way.

Love is unselfish, sacrificial, kind and just.

Love seeks the good and the well-being of the other.

This love, this is the way of Jesus.  And it's game changer.

Imagine our homes and families when this way of love is the way.

Imagine our neighborhoods and communities when love is the way.

Imagine our governments and countries when love is the way.

Imagine business and commerce when this love is the way.

Imagine our world when love is the way.

No child would go to bed hungry in such a world as that.

Poverty would become history in such a world as that. T

he earth would be as a sanctuary in such a world as that.

We would treat one another as children of God, regardless of differences.

We would learn how to lay our swords and shields down by the riverside

to study war no more.

There would be a new heaven, a new earth, a new world.

A new and beautiful human family

The very dream of God

Love is strong as death

It's flashes are flashes of fire.

Many waters cannot quench love

iii

The late French Jesuit, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, was at once a scientist, a Roman Catholic priest, a theologian, a true mystic.  His was one of the great minds and spirits of the 20th century.

He suggested that the discovery and harnessing of fire

was one of the great technological discoveries of human history.

Fire made it possible to cook food, thereby reducing the spread of disease.

Fire made it possible to stay warm in cold climates,

thereby marking human migration possible.

Fire made the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Industrial Revolution possible.

If you drove here this morning, you did so in part because of harnessed fire.

I flew here from the U.S. due to controlled burn of fire.

Fire is involved in broadcasting this wedding around the world.

And we can text, tweet, email, and otherwise socially engage one another

due to fire.  Fire was one of the great technological discoveries of humanity.

In light of this, de Chardin said that if human beings ever harness

the energies of love,

then for the second time in the history of the world,

we will have discovered fire.

Love is the very fire and energy of real life!

Dr. King was right:

"We must discover the power of love,

he redemptive power of love.

And when we discover that,

we will be able to make of this old world a new world.

Love is the only way."

My brother, my sister, God love you, God bless you.

My brothers, my sisters, God love you, God bless you.

And may God hold us all

In those almighty hands of love.

Amen.

The two exchanged vows Saturday in a gorgeous ceremony at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, in front of 600 guests (and millions of people watching worldwide).

After the wedding, Harry and Meghan stepped out to acknowledge the 200 representatives in attendance from charities that Harry supports. From there, the newlyweds took a carriage ride around Windsor Town that lasted about 25 minutes.

That’s where Markle is expected to break with tradition and possibly give a speech. The palace hasn’t confirmed any musical guests, but it’s rumored that Elton John, the Spice Girls or even Ed Sheeran (despite his repeated denials) might perform.

After the big day, the couple will likely head back to London to their new home at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace. The Duke and Duchess of TK plan to delay their honeymoon so they can immediately begin charity work and attend Prince Charles’ 70th Birthday Patronage Celebration, which takes place May 22.

Now known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the newlyweds emerged from their ceremony in St. George's Chapel and shared a short kiss on the grounds of Windsor Castle, before descending hand-in-hand down the chapel stairs to be whisked off in a horse-drawn carriage.

The couple had married in front of of hundreds of guests, including British celebrities and many from across the Atlantic, such as Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, and George and Amal Clooney.

Couples do not typically kiss in Church of England wedding ceremonies, but it has been tradition for royal couple to kiss publicly soon after for the world to see.

The couple was first seen publicly kissing in May last year, when Meghan went to watch Harry play a charity polo match in Berkshire. They were photographed in the car park embracing and kissing before the match.

The couple's marriage is the culmination of a romance that began in 2016, when the two went on a blind date in London set up by a mutual friend.

Meghan visited Harry during his trip to Botswana later that same year, and it was in October 2016 that rumors emerged the pair were dating.

The couple announced their engagement in November last year, where the world got a glimpse of the engagement ring, made from a large Botswana diamond and two smaller diamonds that belonged to Harry's late mother, Princess Diana.

Fortunately, guests at the royal wedding have quite the meal waiting for them. Kensington Palace has confirmed the menu for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s lunchtime reception — including one seriously gorgeous wedding cake.

California-born baker Claire Ptak created the sugary treat, which features an Amalfi lemon curd filling and buttercream laced with elderflower syrup from Queen Elizabeth II’s Sandringham estate. Some 150 fresh flowers, including peonies and roses, have been artfully arranged around the cake, which has four separate tiers.

The newlywed Duke and Duchess of Sussex will cut the cake at their reception at St. George’s Hall in Windsor, but not before their 600 or so guests have feasted upon an extensive menu of seasonal vegetables and lamb.

The menu includes Scottish langoustines wrapped in smoked salmon with citrus crème fraîche; grilled English asparagus wrapped in Cumbrian ham; garden pea panna cotta with quail eggs and lemon verbena; heritage tomato and basil tartare with balsamic pearls; poached free-range chicken bound in a lightly spiced yogurt with roasted apricot; croquette of confit Windsor lamb, roasted vegetables and shallot jam; and farm asparagus spears with mozzarella and sun-blush tomatoes.
