Over ten billion naira erosion fund has been approved by the World Bank through the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, for intervention in additional four erosion sites in the State.

While explaining recent activities of the Ministry to newsmen in his office, in Awka, the Commissioner for Environment, Architect Michael Okonkwo, who announced this, disclosed that State government, in its pro-activeness has since provided its own counterpart fund.

The Commissioner while enumerating the sites to include Nkpor Flyover, Ire Village Obosi, Enugwu-Ukwu, and Abidi Village Umuoji, said that more interventions have become necessary as the State is now the smallest in terms of land mass due to erosion menace, calling for preventive measures including tree planting.

On the ongoing demolition of illegal structures and drainage distilling in the State, Commissioner Okonkwo stressed that the joint action by Ministries and agencies, is in line with the extant law of the State and restated that the Ministry will re-activate sanitary inspectors, to check defaulters.

Reiterating the need for street traders to make use of empty shops in markets all over the State, the Commissioner stated that State government will soon invoke the extant law that makes it the responsibility of shop owners to clean their drainage, saying that failure to comply will result to prosecution by State government.

He explained that the Ministry is working out modalities to re-arrange the waste management system of the State, cautioning against illegal mining activities to ensure environment sustainability.

Speaking on encroachment on forest reserves by people who presumed that such reserves are abandoned property, Architect Mike Okonkwo warned that doing so will attract prosecution according to the law, and revealed that the Ministry will soon carve out an agency that will take care of parks, gardens and beautification of the State, to concretize the Governor's vision of a healthier, more beautiful and prosperous Anambra.

Commissioner Okonkwo, who called for partnership with Ndi Anambra to achieve the vision and mandate of the present administration, pointed out that the Ministry, under his watch will witness a lot of innovation, among which is seeking out ways to convert waste to wealth, as against merely waste movement from one point to another which which he said leads to environmental degradation.
