One year after five Journalists were unlawfully arrested and detained by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Monitoring Unit in Warri, a renowned lawyer, Mr. Oghenejabor Ikimi Esq today urged the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, to prevail on the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to pay compensations/damages to the five journalists as well as ensure that that the judgement of a Delta State High Court to the effect is obeyed and executed.

Ikimi disclosed this in a telephone chat with Our correspondent in Warri as he explained the current stage of the matter.

Ikimi said,”We have written to the National Human Rights Commission. We have told them. We sent all our judgments to them and we told them they should not investigate anything because there’s nothing to investigate again. We have gotten judgement, but rather, they should ensure that the judgment is executed.

According to Ikimi,”We sent all the judgments to them. So, we are waiting for them to prevail on the IGP to pay us.

“They say we should come to Abuja, write statements, bring money, mobilize them. It’s still the same order. So, I told them that we have passed that stage of investigation.

“You know they called me from Abuja that they want to investigate the matter. So, I wrote back to National Human Rights Commission. All the papers are with me, telling them that we don’t need that. We have gotten judgments and that they should ensure that the judgment is obeyed by the IGP. So, they now wrote me asking, did I serve them? I now replied. I said we have served them. All Certified True Copies of the judgment. So, they should prevail on the IGP to ensure that the judgment is obeyed.”

It would be recalled that the five journalists were unlawfully arrested and detained on Tuesday May 26,2020.

The five Journalists who were not happy with the way they were maltreated, dragged the IGP Monitoring Unit to Court where they filed a fundamental right suit claiming damages.
