Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has described the gruesome murder of a popular journalist in Ondo State, Olubunmi Afuye by armed robbers on Thursday, as a dastardly act.
According to Akeredolu, Afuye’s death will cost the journalism profession a huge loss, particularly that he was a bright, brilliant and upcoming star.
On Thursday, Afuye popularly known in the state as ‘Bumbam’ was killed by gunmen who attacked a branch of the United Bank for Africa, UBA, in Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore Local Government Area of the state.
Afuya, who newly took up appointment at Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin after resigning from the state-owned radio, Orange FM, was said to have ran into the robbers while on his way from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, where he had gone to officiate an event.
While condoling with the Nigeria Union of Journalists and his family over the incident, Akeredolu urged that Afuye’s killers must be arrested and brought to book.
“He was particularly close to us; we all admired his candour and carriage, especially his brilliant delivery at functions he compered that we had reasons to grace. His demise is not just painful. It is very pathetic and unbearable.
“Meanwhile, a specific directive has been given by the Governor that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are apprehended and brought to book in the shortest possible time,” he said.
