A call has gone to the Bauchi State government to recruit more health workers into the state civil service to make up for the shortfall of workers in the health sector.

The call was made on Thursday by a coalition of civil society organisations in the state under the aegis of Bauchi State Network of Civil Society Organisations (BASNEC) during an advocacy visit to the Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BSPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, in his office.

According to BASNEC chairman, Mr Jinjiri Garba, who led other members of the network on the visit, there was shortage of health workers at health facilities in the state, a development he said was depriving people of the state of efficient and effective health services.

Garba and his group’s visit coincides with the time the state government was preparing the 2022 budget, adding that as such, the government should include recruitment of more health workers in the budget.

He then advised BSPHCDA to give special allowances to rural health workers in the state with a view to encouraging those deployed in rural areas to stay there to work.

The network chairman claimed that what is currently happening is that many health workers posted to rural areas abscond from their duty posts, thereby, leaving patients unattended to.

Responding, Dr Mohammed expressed appreciation to the civil society organisations for the visit, declaring that CSOs and non governmental organisations have important roles to play in building the state.

He informed the visiting network members that state government had plan to employ 100 new doctors in the state.
