Patients with peptic ulcer have been advised to stop the consumption of milk to soothe heartburn.

Mrs. Esther Oke, a retired Matron, while discussing with DAILY POST, also disclosed that though milk may give temporary relief, the fat in milk can prompt the tummy to make more acid which worsens ulcer pain.

While noting that many out of ignorance were guilty of drinking milk to reduce pains associated with peptic ulcer, Oke advised patients to take yogurt because it was a good substitute.

The retired Matron revealed that calcium found in milk has a tendency to relax the sphincter, the Oesophagus opening, thereby causing more heartburn, adding that relief for such pain usually subsides after treatment with antacid.

“In order to prevent peptic ulcer disease, certain lifestyle changes must be part of everyday living adopted by individuals.

“These lifestyle changes include the following, loosing of weight, stop smoking, reduction of alcohol intake, avoidance of spicy foods and excessive intake of coffee,” she said.

She added that avoidance of large fatty meals and personal decisions to stop abusing painkillers would go a long way in preventing the unpleasant diagnosis of peptic ulcer.
