The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has showered encomiums on the Senate for reversing itself over the issue of electronic transmission of votes.

DAILY POST had reported that the Senate finally bowed to public pressure as it passed an amendment allowing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to transmit election results electronically without having recourse to any other approval from any quarter.

Reacting to the development, the President-General of OYC, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said it was victory for democracy.

Okwu said in a statement made available to DAILY POST that “we are delighted that the National Assembly has finally redeemed its image.

“When a few weeks back the Federal lawmakers went against popular wishes of the people, we were one of those that cried on top of our voices; we were saddened then because we saw it as another opportunity lost to save the future of this nation.

“However, we are glad that the lawmakers have made a u-turn and bowed to the wishes of the people; that is the spirit of true representation.

“This development is a victory for Nigerians; it is a victory for democracy and we will cherish it for a very long time.

“Now that this hurdle has been cleared on the way of INEC, it has no reason again not to give Nigerians a credible election. We expect nothing but the best, with the Anambra election in our mind.”

He urged the National Assembly to continue to be on the side of the masses and not the powers that be, stressing “this is also very paramount as they commence budget defence by ministries, agencies and MDAs. They should always be guided by their oath which is to do all things that will promote the interests of Nigerians not any single individual.”
