Former Manchester United midfielder, Owen Hargreaves has said Fred wouldn’t have played for the club for at least one month if it was the time of Sir Alex Ferguson in charge.
It was Fred’s error that cost Manchester United their 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday and Hargreaves believes Ferguson would have dropped the Brazilian midfielder following the mistake.
Manchester United took the lead through Anthony Martial shortly before half time but Everton came back through a quick counter attack which was finished by Andros Townsend.
During Everton’s counter attack, Fred was barged off the ball by Demarai Gray, who was then able to run towards United’s goal.
Fred’s attitude angered Hargreaves, and the former Bayern Munich star told Premier League Productions, “Never ever, not in a million years [should that goal be allowed to happen].
“That’s what you get paid for, that’s why you’re there, that’s your job to stop that goal. I would’ve taken that personally.
“It can’t happen. Sir Alex wouldn’t forgive you for that, you wouldn’t have played for a month, seriously.
“He has to win those tackles. And if he loses it, you foul him, you bring him down.
“You’ve got to win that. You cannot get bumped off the ball by Demarai Gray and if he does, you foul him.
“United don’t have control of games, it’s their corner, how can a goal like that happen?
“I know Harry Maguire is missing and they miss his leadership but if you’re going to play two defensive midfielders in there – McTominay and Fred – that goal can’t happen.”
Some sections of Manchester United fanbase blamed the club’s boss for the 1-1 draw for deciding to drop Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and some other top stars on the bench for the game.
Manchester United, who were defeated 1-0 at Old Trafford by Aston Villa last weekend, are currently on third position in the league, one point behind Chelsea and Liverpool.
